JINAN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A Hong Kong cargo ship sank off Weihai City, east China's Shandong Province, Sunday after a collision with a Liberian-registered freighter, rescuers said.All 46 crew members of the two vessels were safe after the accident at 5:23 a.m., the city's maritime safety bureau said in a statement.The accident could have occurred in foggy conditions at the time, said Li Zhiqiang, an official with the city's maritime safety bureauThe 23 Chinese crew of the Hong Kong-registered Bright Century and the 23 Indian crew of the Liberia-registered Sea Success had been rescued as of noon, he said.Water had flooded into the damaged prow of the Sea Success, but the vessel was still afloat.The bureau had dispatched a ship to shadow the vessel as it was still in negotiations with the owner about the cost of towing the ship to port.The bureau is investigating the cause of the accident.
YICHUAN, Henan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll after a central China mine blast last week has risen to 40,with 6 still missing, local authorities said on Tuesday.An official with the rescue headquarters confirmed Tuesday that 98 people were working underground in the Guomin coal mine in Yichuan county when the blast occurred at 7:20 p.m. on March 31. 57 were lifted to the ground unharmed, 35 were killed and six are still missing.The explosion also killed five and injured one on the ground, the official said.The illegal coal mine owned by village head Wang Guozheng was poorly managed and even does not have a payroll list. That's why the dead and missing could not be identified, the official said.Ten people allegedly accountable for the accident are under control by police, including mine owner Wang Guozheng, who was previously given a reprieved imprisonment sentence in 2009 for covering up a mine accident.Work safety authorities ordered the mine to suspend operations after a gas outburst on May 1, 2009. TAIPEI, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Wednesday started their second round of talks in Taipei to pave the way for a long-awaited economic deal that is expected to boost cross-Strait economic ties.The two-day meeting in Tashi, Taoyuan county, is expected to speed up the consultation process of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The two sides are expected to exchange views on operational and technological topics including the main content of the agreement and consultation arrangements in the future.The mainland side is composed of directors of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), experts and economic affairs officials.Tang Wei, director-general of the Ministry of Commerce's Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao affairs department, said such an agreement would further cross-Strait economic cooperation, and help the two sides cope with the impact of possible economic crises in the future and the increasingly competitive international market.
