SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It has been nearly two years since Denelle Mitchell’s husband took his own life. CAL FIRE Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 5, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge. Denelle Mitchell did not want to talk about the day it happened, but the emotions she dealt with in the days and months after his death are hard to forget. “One of the first feelings I felt was ashamed or embarrassed at the type of way that he died,” Denelle Mitchell said. “It comes and goes in waves of being mad or sad.”Her husband was dedicated to his job — a job that was his passion.“He loved the acts of fighting fires. He loved the community… the brotherhood and sisterhood that they had,” Denelle said. But there were difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends.” What wasn’t obvious to many were struggles behind the scenes.RELATED: Veterinarian suicides on the rise: Student loan debt, compassion fatigue among factors in suicide increase“He did talk about his depression quite a bit and I lived it with him. I was there with him when we were going through some really hard times,” Denelle said. “Marriage can be hard, owning a home and renovating a home can be hard, having a kid — that’s a lot of life stresses.”There were also tough times at work. “The fire seasons were getting longer and harder,” she said. “There’s days where as a firefighter wife, they come home and they just are so exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally drained." The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance recorded 98 firefighter and EMT suicides so far this year. Jeff Dill, the founder of FBHA, said the number this year is on track to be higher than 2018. In 2018, there were 108 suicides. In 2017, the number was 120. A study by the Ruderman Family Foundation said depression among firefighters is nearly double the general population. Firefighters and police are at higher risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide, according to the study.Denelle now focuses on raising their son, Aiden. She encourages loved ones to pay attention to those who may be struggling. “Don’t just let it go by the wayside. Don’t take no for an answer… try to research the signs,”Denelle said.Locally and statewide, action has been taken to ensure resources are available for first responders. Recently, the County Board of Supervisors approved the Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program, which will offer confidential mental and behavior health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional.The governor also signed several bills that focus on improving protections for the state’s firefighters and first responders when it comes to mental health. AB 1116 (the California Firefighter Peer Support and Crisis Referral Services Act) establishes statewide standards for peer support programs. SB 542 (the Trauma Treatment Act) will provide “first responders with workers’ compensation while they recover from their mental health scars,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. “Bringing awareness to the topic makes it easier to talk about,” Denelle said. She said she is grateful that she did not have to go through this process alone. “I wanted to thank all our friends and family for the support, especially the Cal Fire community, Local 2881, and Chief Patrick Walker,” Denelle told Team 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not unusual to collect Christmas decorations year-round, but using them to cover every inch of a late model Dodge Caravan is pretty unique.He's known to many as the "Christmas Man of San Diego," whose van conversion continues to turn heads and spark smiles — no matter the season or social distance."He's a trans-dimensional emperor of over a google-plex of universes," said Larry Bogaert, as he stands with his pet parrot, Emerald Eagle, on his forearm. "I'm his Prime Minister and his daddy."In his mid-60s, Bogaert is a man with a big imagination who loves to share tales, turning his late-model Dodge Caravan into a storytelling canvas."I have Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell and the Boys going to Never Never Land," Bogaert shares.Almost every square inch of his vehicle features his own hand-drawn depictions of famed children's stories, mostly from English literature."And then I have Fezziwig's warehouse here," Bogaert says, pointing to various images on the car. "If you remember Scrooge did his apprenticeship at Fezziwig's.""For some things, I have a plan in mind, but other things as I buy things or acquire things you think, Oh, I can use that on the castle," Bogaert says, pointing to the roof of the vehicle which is covered by a towering display of church-like spires and angels. I think it's a positive message and we certainly need that now more than ever."Uncertain times for many, and Bogaert can relate to the feeling."With the coronavirus going on you should see how many people cheer my car because it's just something uplifting during these times," says Bogaert. "I like to be optimistic with the car. I like to be optimistic for myself if I can be. But I do get depressed."Underneath a kaleidoscope of ornaments inside the van, there is a snug space, where Bogaert sleeps, as — for the moment — this is his home."I bought a grocery store up in Crescent City. I always wanted to live in the redwoods," Bogaert said.He says that business venture years ago didn't go as planned, and the financial ramifications remain. But he doesn't dwell, as he focuses attention on another part of the van.After all, he and Emerald Eagle have a "google-plex of universes" to run. And they are, apparently, ever-expanding."I am adding more towers and a few more parts to it. I have some stuff inside that will go on in the next week or few days," said Bogaert. 3229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s an online service that brings groceries right to your doorstep, but some who work for Instacart told Team 10 they are being treated unfairly.Instacart entered the San Diego market in 2016. It basically works like Uber, where people can sign up to be “shoppers” and fill orders for a fee.Jacquelyn Westby signed up for Instacart to make extra cash.“We shop for groceries and then deliver using our own vehicles, our own gas,” Westby said. She recently graduated from grad school and is looking for a job in the field of occupational therapy. Instacart helped keep her afloat as she dealt with growing bills.“This job was the difference between homeless and not. Being able to eat and not,” Westby said.Westby said Instacart changed its pay structure over the past couple months. A company spokesperson said changes were meant to improve the shopper experience, adding things like “pay per mile” and estimated earnings. Westby, however, said the new pay formula has made things worse.“Before I could easily work a four hour shift in the morning or the afternoon and make 0 [to] 0 and be done with my day,” Westby said. “Now, I’m working 12 hours a day and sometimes I’ll make upwards of . SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local health officials said Thursday a new case of vaping-related lung injury has been reported, as county leaders prepare to consider new vaping regulations.So far in San Diego, there have been 43 confirmed cases of vaping-associated lung injury with three cases under investigation. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.The CDC has said that vitamin E acetate and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are closely linked with e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury. CDC recommends people avoid using THC-containing e-cigarettes or vaping products.RELATED: San Diego woman hospitalized with vaping illness warns others“Vaping-related lung injuries continue to be reported in the region and that’s concerning,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.As of Jan. 7, the CDC has reported 2,602 hospitalizations or deaths from sudden and severe lung injuries associated with vaping.The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss several potential local actions on regulating e-cigarette devices during a Jan. 14 meeting. Those ordinances include a ban on flavored tobacco sale and distribution, device moratorium, and restricting e-cigarette smoking to outdoor areas at restaurant. The ordinances would apply to unincorporated parts of the county.“As stewards of public health; we have a responsibility to raise awareness and act in the best interest of the public to protect them,” said Supervisor Fletcher. “Right now we simply do not know enough about the chemicals being consumed and their impacts. We are acting in a similar fashion to other jurisdictions in California, we are acting with an abundance of caution.” A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28.
