BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's macroeconomic management would be put to the test both by the domestic and international markets in 2010, said Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Zhang Ping Friday.The country's fiscal and monetary policies would be tested given the uncertainties of 2010, Zhang said."As to monetary policies, if the bank continues to provide easy loans,inflation may occur. But if the government tightens monetary policies too soon, the economy may relapse into recession." said Li Daokui, director of the Center for China in the World Economy, Tsinghua University.Last year, Chinese banks lent an unprecedented 9.6 trillion yuan (1.4 trillion U.S. dollars), nearly twice as much as 2008, and nearly half of 2009's gross domestic product (GDP).This year, for fear of asset bubbles and bad loans, the banking regulators have begun to put the brakes on bank lending. The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central bank, raised the reserve ratio by 0.5 of a percentage point earlier this month, hoping to reduce lending.According to the PBOC, new loans in January totalled 1.39 trillion yuan, down 230 billion yuan year-on-year, and China Banking Regulatory Commission Chairman Liu Mingkang said the Chinese government planned to restrict credit supply to 7.5 trillion yuan (about 1.1 trillion U.S.dollars) in 2010.Too much public investment caused weak private investment and overcapacity in some industries like steel, said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice chairman of the NDRC."There's uncertainties about economic growth restructuring and fiscal stimulus plans," said Tang Min, vice secretary-general of China Development Research Foundation.The central government allocated about 924.3 billion yuan for public spending last year, 503.8 billion yuan more than the 2008 budget, said Finance Minister Xie Xuren.To face the challenges, fiscal policies would focus on consumption stimulus and development of new economic sectors like new energy industries, said Xie at the Central Economic Work Conference held last month.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday called on the Chinese people to pool their strength and resources to make sure the Shanghai World Expo a success.     With just 106 days to go before the Expo opening on May 1, Hu visited the Expo site Friday during an inspection tour in Shanghai.     "Hosting the World Expo is not only a significant event of Shanghai, but also of the whole nation," he said, noting it was both the responsibility of Shanghai and the whole country to hold a successful Expo. BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday said China and the United States should respect each other's core interests and properly handle sensitive affairs in a bid to preserve the sound development of bilateral ties.     China and the United States should handle bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), in a meeting with a U.S. senate delegation.     Wu hailed the sound development of China-U.S. relations in 2009,saying it indicated a smooth transition from the Bush administration to the Obama's and the relationship between the countries was progressing well.     He labeled the China-U.S. relationship as "one of the world's most important" during the half-hour meeting in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Wu pledged to further the exchanges between the two country's parliaments in a bid to promote strategic mutual trust, mutually beneficial cooperation and friendship between the two peoples.     The delegation, headed by Senator Patty Murray, was in Beijing for a meeting under a regular exchange mechanism between the two parliaments, in which the two sides discussed such topics as bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and climate change.     The U.S. senators highlighted the importance of relations with China, promised to enhance communication and dialogue with the NPC so as to promote mutual understanding.

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- The gang-related trials in southwest China's Chongqing were carried out in an open, just and transparent way, Qian Feng, president of the Higher People's Court of Chongqing, said here Friday.Qian made the remarks when attending a panel meeting of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, in Beijing."The crackdown on gangs was just one of the judicial work highlights in Chongqing last year," Qian said while attending the meeting. "The number of gang-related cases and those involved was relatively low in Chongqing compared with the country's figures.""We heard those cases strictly according to the criminal law ," Qian said.He said more than 200 deputies to legislatures at different levels and hundreds of journalists heard the court proceedings of those cases, particularly the case of Wen Qiang, a former judicial chief of the municipality.Chongqing started a sweeping crackdown against organized crimes in the city in June last year, in which more than 3,300 suspects were arrested.A total of 87 officials were prosecuted after the massive crackdown for being related with gangs, including 12 high-ranking officials.

It is an occasion for reunions of family members, relatives and friends.
