EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - An El Cajon homeowner knew he had a bee problem but never expected the "massive" hive discovered in his backyard."It's pretty incredible," said Herb Herbert. He first noticed a few bees about two years ago in the back yard of his home on Primrose Drive."The bees were coming in and out of a small hole at the bottom of my shed," said Herbert. The vent hole is one of several that led to open spaces under his shed. Last winter, the bees seemed to go away, but they were back in the summer. Herbert was stung once while mowing the lawn."There were 20 to 30 bees buzzing outside at any time," said Herbert.Herbert had plans for some entertaining in the near future, so last week he hired Bee Nice Wildlife Management. They peeled back the wood flooring in one corner of the shed and discovered a 30-inch long, 70-pound hive, home to between 100,000 and 150,000 honey bees."I had no idea the scope of what was under there. It was massive and amazing. The bee guy said we were lucky, the bees were getting set to expand the hive," said Herbert. As the local bee season gets underway, Herbert calls that possibility mind-boggling. While honeybees are generally not aggressive, they can still be dangerous. The bee removal company was able to relocate the hive and the bees. They say the size of the hive is not an indication of what may lie ahead. Because it's been a slightly above average rainfall, the region is likely in store for a typical bee season. 1482
People around the U.S. experienced some internet downtime on Monday. The outage was brief and service has been restored. The culprit was a configuration issue from Level 3, a telecommunications and internet service provider owned by CenturyLink. In a statement to CNN Tech, CenturyLink said a "configuration error" disrupted service and technicians restored service in 90 minutes.CenturyLink declined to provide further details.Though Level 3 was responsible for the issue, it affected other internet providers like Comcast. That's because Level 3's infrastructure delivers content for other internet services.Comcast said the service disruption to its Xfinity internet service has been resolved.According to reports from Down Detector, a website that monitors internet outages, Comcast and Level 3 connectivity was impacted nationwide beginning around 10 a.m. Pacific.Other internet service providers including Spectrum, Verizon, and AT&T showed a spike in connectivity issues, too, though they were not as widespread. (AT&T has agreed to acquire CNN's parent company Time Warner, and the deal is pending regulatory approval.) It's unclear if the spikes were related to the Level 3 outage. The website does not provide numbers of people affected.Following public complaints of widespread outages, rumors temporarily circulated online that the outage was a coordinated hack of some sort. But, as CenturyLink confirmed, it was a misconfiguration.CenturyLink completed its acquisition of Level 3 earlier this month. 1548

With summer officially upon us, working families will be shelling out more money on summer camps and childcare. In fact, a new study out this week shows that a significant number of families will incur credit card debt as a result of childcare costs. The Bankrate.com study shows that one third of parents who will pay for childcare this summer will accumulate credit card debt. It also found that parents will spend an average of almost ,000 per child, and almost a fifth of them will spend more than ,000So, many parents are doing their best to find free activities. Christ Church Denver offers a weeklong vacation bible school for free, and it’s open to any family, regardless of whether they attend church.“We pull a lot of people form the community that’s not just our church, because we offer our program for free,” says Christ Church’s Tammie Sawicki. And FREE is a big selling point to working parents.“Childcare in Denver is relatively expensive,” a mom says as she dropped her kids off. “And summer activities and camps can add up, especially if you have two children.”Lauren Hipp specializes in early learning for the non-profit advocacy group Mom’s Rising. Hipp says it’s a tough time to be a working parent.“Childcare costs have continued to rise over the last couple decades,” Hipp says. She adds that having a stimulating place for kids to go during the summer is key.“Most American children live in families where all available parents are in the workforce,” Hipp says. “So childcare is a real necessity for families and it’s a great opportunity for children to get healthy growth development so they’re ready and successful in life.”Other places to consider that often provide more affordable week-long camps for kids: a local YMCA, parks and recreation department, or a local Council for the Arts chapter. 1836
(CNN) -- An American woman has been charged with human trafficking after allegedly trying to smuggle a six-day-old baby out of the Philippines. At a press conference by the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Thursday, International Airport Investigation Division chief Manuel Dimaano said the 43-year-old U.S. woman had used a sling bag to allegedly hide the baby while passing through immigration, and did not provide any documentation for the child.Dimaano said that after immigration, the woman allegedly removed the baby from the bag and was carrying it when she tried to board her Delta Airlines flight at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport.Philippines authorities were contacted when the woman couldn't provide documentation for the child when asked by Delta Airlines crew at the boarding gate."She has been charged with a violation of the Anti-trafficking in Persons Act of 2003," NBI spokesperson Auralyn Pascual said."The child's situation must have been very difficult during the time that he was put inside that bag."Dimaano said the mother had been contacted by authorities and would be charged. Police have not been able to find the child's father, he added. The Philippines Bureau of Immigration first announced on Wednesday that it had detained the woman. CNN Philippines reported that when discovered, she claimed to be the child's aunt. The NBI said the woman allegedly carried the baby from Davao to Manila, before attempting to fly out of the country.
