The landscape is green with trees that scale up the mountains that shelter small cities like McKee, Kentucky from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.The entire county has one stoplight.“Great community, great people. I love it here,” said Keith Gabbard, CEO of Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative.In this a population of fewer than 1,000 people, community means everything. It’s why Gabbard worked to bring hope to his neighbors, like Muncy.Gabbard brought fiber optic internet to the small city.“When you say fiber, people say, ‘cereal? What are you talking about?’” Gabbard recalled of what people thought when the idea first hit the area.Fiber optic internet is some of the fastest internet you can find.“Fine glass the size of a human hair that you send a light through,” he explained.In 2014, Gabbard's rural part of the Bluegrass State went from barely having any internet connection to now having some of the fastest internet in the country.“Think of the speed of light and how fast that is, that’s how I like to compare it,” Gabbard said. “Our Internet here is as good as New York City.”More than half of Americans say internet access has been essential during the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, according to 2016 figures, 39 percent of rural Americans lack access to broadband internet.The cost of bringing broadband to the Jackson County area wasn’t cheap. Gabbard says grants and loans covered most of the broadband network’s -million cost.But one of the biggest payoffs of the light-speed connection is opportunity.“We’re talking about people who have been working at a gas station before on minimum wage that are doing tech support for Apple from their home,” Gabbard said.Gabbard says the network has helped bring hundreds of jobs to the area.Muncy now works doing customer support for a major tech company.“If it wasn’t for the internet, I couldn’t do my job period,” he said.For him, the connection is to more than just the internet; it’s to a new life. 2320

Hurricane Hunters have been flying in and out of Hurricane Delta continuously for days, getting a close-up look as the hurricane has re- intensified.Delta regained some of its previous fury. The hurricane, which was once a Category 4 before striking Mexico, dropped to a Category 1 on Wednesday. As the storm is set to strike the Louisiana coast on Friday, Delta has re-intensified into a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph.As of Thursday evening, the hunters found that Delta had a 30-mile wide eye. Getting such detailed data from inside the hurricane can give forecasters a sense of the impact a hurricane will produce.There are two Air Force Reserve groups that fly into hurricanes to send back data to the National Hurricane Center.In total, the Air Force Reserve utilizes 20 WC-130J aircraft that are equipped with palletized meteorological data-gathering instruments.According to the Hurricane Hunters, “The navigator keeps track of the aircraft's position and movement and monitors radar to avoid tornadic activity. The flight meteorologist acts as flight director and observes and records meteorological data at flight level using a computer that encodes weather data every 30 seconds. The weather reconnaissance loadmaster collects and records vertical meteorological data using a parachute-borne sensor known as a dropsonde. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — One week after San Diego County lifted the beach closure at the Imperial Beach Pier, many people are enjoying the waves. But parts of the coastline remain closed due to the Tijuana River runoff contamination. Nicolas Pasculli of Hillcrest, drove down specifically to Imperial Beach to avoid the weekend crowds.“We’ve had rain for such a long time. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air," Pasculli said. We met him sunbathing on the sand, just south of Seacoast Drive. Compared to some of the other areas in the county, this beach was empty.“Maybe because the sign is up and it says to be careful, the water might be contaminated,” Pasculli said. Bright yellow signs are clearly posted at the entrance of the beach. Last week, San Diego County Environmental Health gave the green light for people to enjoy beaches north of the last house on Southeast Drive in Imperial Beach. But Pasculli was right in the middle of the 'Red zone,' where the county deemed unsafe due to Tijuana sewage contamination since last November. That did not seem to bother him. “The way I look at it, we’re pretty close to that last house, so I think we’re in a gray zone, so I’m not worried about it,” Pasculli said. Surfer Dane Crosby was not phased by the warnings either.“It’s a north swell today, so I know that the water is moving south," he said.The Imperial Beach resident already surfed the waters in the morning. He was at the beach again, walking his dog Dixie.“When it is dirty, you’ll get an essence of detergent, kind of like a peppery detergent smell,” Crosby said. But today, he did not smell anything. Neither did Pasculli.
