SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Police tracked the man's phone to Sunset Cliffs where an SDPD lieutenant watched him drive off the cliff at a high rate of speed just after 5 a.m.RELATED: Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsPolice: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckWiese used a 100-foot long dog tether to rappel down the cliff to the truck, which had landed upside down in the water on top of a rock. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office released new details about the two victims, an 80-year-old man and his 9-year-old granddaughter, that were killed in a early Monday morning La Jolla house fire.Angie Keefe, her 11-year-old sister, and their father were spending the night at their grandfather's house Sunday. The girls and their grandfather were sleeping upstairs at the home on 548 Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway. The children's father told police he was "downstairs smoking by the fireplace while the decedent was asleep in his upstairs bedroom and his granddaughters were asleep in another upstairs bedroom," the county medical examiner's office said. The children's father told investigators that he poured kerosene on a t-shirt and burned it in the fireplace then fell asleep. The father said he was awoken at around 3:40 a.m. Monday when the fire spread to the living room. A neighbor called police five minutes later while the father tried putting out the fire. With the home engulfed in flames, he ran to the back of the house and yelled for the siblings to jump from the second floor. The older sister jumped into her father's arms but his 9 year-old daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal, remained in her bed.It took crews hours to put out the blaze which destroyed the home."Firemen located the remains of the decedent next to his bed and found his 9 year-old granddaughter in her bed, amongst the debris after the fire had been contained," the county medical examiner's office said. "They were both pronounced dead at the scene."The children's father suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries. The county medical examiner's office said Robert Keefe and his granddaughter suffered "thermal injuries with inhalation of products of combustion." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — They're sometimes referred to as nature's "clean up crew," generally depicted tearing the last remnants of nutrition off the bones of an animal.During Labor Day weekend, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will celebrate International Vulture Awareness Days with a series of interactive booths and zookeepers talks."We’re busting old myths and highlighting the fascinating facts and importance of these superb scavengers," the zoo says.Special feeding demonstrations and displays will also help visitors learn even more about the incredible bird:Interactive booths at Condor Ridge (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.)California condor Keeper Talk at Condor Ridge (10:30 a.m.)Palm nut vulture feeding at Safari Base Camp (11:30 a.m.)Vulture Keeper Talk at African Woods (12:30 p.m.)Large vultures Keeper Talk at African Outpost (1:30 p.m.)Condor Keeper Talk at Condor Ridge (3 p.m.)According to the zoo, vultures serve as clean up and are vital to ecosystems, performing the job that no other animal seems inclined to do. It helps that the birds' bald heads help keep rotting food stick to their head as they eat — it's like they were made for the job.Not all of these endangered birds perform the same behavior, the zoo points out online. While the Ruppell's vulture dines on typical vulture fare, they also are the highest-flying bird out there, reportedly being spotted flying as high as 35,000 feet.RELATED: San Diego Zoo calls for action against moves to weaken Endangered Species ActOf course, there's the California Condor, which the zoo has helped bring back from the brink of extinction to begin populating the state once again. They're one of the largest flying birds in the country.Egyptian vultures don't have a bald head because their food isn't as messy. Instead, they dine on lizards, overripe fruit, rabbits, and ostrich eggs. They're actually one of the only tool-using birds, using rocks to crack the tough eggs and feed on the insides, the zoo says. That's just a taste of some vulture knowledge guests will soak in Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. 2055
