BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Monday it would extend anti-dumping duties on phthalic anhydride imported from the Republic of Korea, Japan and India for another five years after review investigation.     Phthalic anhydride is an important industrial chemical mainly used in the mass production of plasticizers for plastics     The imported phthalic anhydride would cause damage to Chinese industries should anti-dumping duties be lifted, said the ministry.     The duties took effect Monday.     On Jan. 7, China imposed anti-dumping measures on phthalic anhydride to offset negative impact on domestic producers.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday that the role of the United Nations should be bolstered in handling the global economic downturn, achieving sustainable development, and safeguarding world peace and security. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing nation, China has always observed the principles of the UN Charter, supported the UN's efforts to improve security, development and human rights and its reform to increase efficiency, Hu said to visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon Hu.     "China will continue to join in the UN undertakings and carry out its duties with responsive and constructive attitude, and will work with the international community to build a harmonious world," Hu said. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.     The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.     The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000imitation guns, the ministry said.     About 12 percent of all guns confiscated were seized in the southern Hainan Province, while about 17 percent of the confiscated bullets came from the central Henan Province, the ministry said.     The southern province of Guangdong seized 34,690 imitation guns, which took up one fourth of the total.     Meanwhile, the MPS urged that efforts to crack down on gun-related crime must not be relaxed yet. Police forces should mobilize the public to report to the ministry if they have information about gun-related crimes, the ministry said on its website.     About 60 percent of the guns confiscated by the police were handed in by the public voluntarily, the ministry said.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Several hundred former generals, famous military artists, and soldiers gathered at the foot of the Great Wall Saturday to celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which falls on August 1.     At the ceremony organized by the China Great Wall Society (CGWS), veterans recited a poem telling their love and wishes for the country and the people.     Lieutenant General Shao Huaze, vice chairman of the CGWS, said the peom was written based on the wishes collected from the veterans.     The CGWS also held an exhibition of more than 500 calligraphy and painting works by former generals.
