In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen.That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow.From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow.They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen.They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic. (KGTV) - A recent break to a sewage pipe south of the U.S.-Mexico border is allowing sewage to flow freely into the Tijuana River Valley and Pacific Ocean, officials say.The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) said they were alerted to the break in the Tijuana sewage pipe by Mexico authorities recently. The pipe broke Dec. 7, according to Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, though the city was notified Tuesday.IBWC officials said Wednesday, "CESPT (Tijuana Water Utility) has informed us through the Mexican Section that a rupture was discovered yesterday on the Colector Poniente in Southeast Tijuana. This rupture caused the soil above the pipe to collapse in an auto junkyard. Several sinkholes were discovered yesterday by the workers at the property and notified CESPT who then diverted the flows upstream to a stormwater collector which drains to the Tijuana River. "The IBWC estimated the flow of sewage into the Tijuana River to be at 300 liters per second, or approximately 7 millions gallons per day. However, there are ways to reduce election-related anxiety, and they're rooted in acting in one's own best interest, and in self-control, according to experts.The situation is exemplified by clashes seen over the weekend.In Times Square on Sunday, demonstrators in support of President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden clashed physically. Police separated the two sides and took a handful of people into custody.There were other such encounters, as well, many of which were posted online.The incidents, along with worries about the accurate vote count, the Postal Service properly doing its job on mail-in voting, long lines to cast a ballot, COVID-19 affecting ability to turn out to vote, and any number of other concerns, all add up to create a stressful election season.Experts who analyze election-related security issues agree.Gloria Browne-Marshall is a constitutional law professor at John Jay College, and author of "She Took Justice" and The Voting Rights War, both of which deal with challenges to voting."Because there have been so many uprisings of militia groups, and so many of these different tactics being used to disrupt protesters," Browne-Marshall said, "people are afraid that those entities are going to come out.""If [groups that are willing to do harm] see that they're losing the election, or their candidate is losing the election," Browne-Marshall continued, "they might come out to intimidate voters."Doron Kempel is a security expert, former Israeli Army commander, and founder of the personal security app Bond. He said that he's well aware of the anxiety that voters have."People feel so tense about what may occur, irrespective of whether you're on this or that side of the aisle," Kempel said in a Zoom interview. "Everybody's concerned that whatever happens, people are going to be upset, and are going to get emotional, and maybe there's going to be a little bit of violence."Polling bears that out.Earlier this month, a YouGov / Braver Angels national poll showed that a majority – 56% of people agreed or strongly agree with the following statement: "America will see an increase in violence as a result of the election."That’s far higher than the 11% who disagree or strongly disagree. Thirty-three percent of people polled said they neither agree nor disagree.The numbers indicate that more people are stressed than not.Research shows that there are ways to manage the tension and even turn it into action that's positive and protective."They should all have a voting plan," Browne-Marshall said, as she listed some ways people can reduce anxiety, by foiling any attempts to suppress voting. "And if things get disrupted by violence in the [voting] line, then don't wait till the last minute. Vote early if you can, in whatever state, vote in the way that's safest," she said.Kempel, the security expert, also said that there are measures that all voters can take to protect themselves during election season.First and foremost, said Kempel, there's reason to be more optimistic about the social and political climate, despite the fact that there's great tension."I don't think that Americans, in general, want to hurt each other," Kempel said. "So the fact that somebody's very upset, and is shouting, even is getting too close to somebody else's nose, and is being very vocal, that does not mean that he or she wants to hurt their counterpart.""Which means for all of us," he continued, "if we manage our egos, and we manage our emotions, there will not be violence."Dr. Steven Stosny is a psychologist who specializes in emotional issues and couples therapy. He coined the term election stress disorder, or ESD, and said that people in our region are experiencing it strongly.To counter it, said Stosny, "The most important thing you can do is connect with your family, your friends, people you love, even if you have to do it by Zoom.""If you're living with someone whom you love, hug that person six times a day," Stosny said. "That gives you a hormone that naturally regulates anxiety, makes you feel close, more trusting.""The second biggest thing," Stosny continued, "is exercise. That's the great reliever of stress.
