SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. Sean McGillicuddy and Deputy Kevin Nulton responded to that address around 2:50 p.m. following reports that a man was screaming, talking about killing himself and others, and throwing items, according to a letter prepared by District Attorney Summer Stephan and addressed to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Body camera footage from two of the lawmen was also released by the D.A.'s office.RELATED: Man who was fatally shot by deputies in Alpine identifiedAs the deputies approached the front door of Ayala's unit and knocked, announcing ``Sheriff's Department'' three times, Ayala opened the door, said ``What's up!'' and jabbed a knife twice through his metal screen door, the body-worn camera footage shows.The deputies backed up from the door as Nulton alerted the others by saying ``Knife, knife, knife.''Ayala then opened the screen door and advanced towards the lawmen, who opened fire, striking him mostly in the upper body, according to Stephan's letter.Ayala died at the scene. His 5-year-old son was inside the apartment during the entire encounter, but was physically unharmed, according to the district attorney.Toxicology results showed Ayala had methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis and alcohol in his system.Stephan's letter concludes that the deputies ``were in a confined space when Ayala advanced on them quickly with a knife in his hand.'' The letter also notes Ayala's previously reported statements about killing people.``The deputies had no other option available to them as they Ayala could stab them immediately and seriously injure or kill them,'' the letter reads.Katra has been employed by the San Diego Sheriff's Department for 18 years, McGillicuddy for 12 years and Nulton for 10 years. 2096

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men who took part in a fatal Pacific Beach home invasion that resulted in the shotgun slaying of a resident were sentenced Friday to state prison terms.Carlos Yslas, 25, and Pedro Ramirez, 28, were sentenced Friday for their roles in the death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was shot in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 29, 2018.Mendivil was living at the home of another defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, at the time of his death and was killed in what court documents describe as a forcible eviction gone wrong.Yslas, who was the gunman in the incident, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison, based on his plea to a voluntary manslaughter charge. Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati said Yslas was released from prison on a residential burglary conviction about a week prior to the shooting.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingRamirez was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, while co- defendant Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison. Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told.Weinberger told police he was drugged on the night of Mendivil's killing and forced to withdraw cash from his bank to pay Yslas and Ramirez, who were brought in to assist in forcibly removing Mendivil from the home, court documents state.However, in the process of forcing Mendivil out, Yslas shot Mendivil twice. According to defense attorney Kristen Haden, Yslas believed the victim was reaching for a weapon, which later turned out to be a knife beneath his mattress.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said. He died at a hospital about 45 minutes later, Dobbs said.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged last February for their roles in the homicide. 2430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain accused of operating an illegal firearms trafficking business was arrested Friday.Former SDSO Capt. Marco Garmo is accused of operating the illegal firearms trafficking business, at times from his office at Rancho San Diego Station, authorities say. The indictment also accuses a fellow Sheriff's deputy, Lt. Fred Magana, prominent San Diego jeweler Leo Hamel, firearms dealer Giovanni Tilotta, and El Cajon resident Waiel Anton with aiding the Captain's business.Officials say Garmo was operating the illegal business during his entire tenure as Captain at the Rancho San Diego Station. The 27-year veteran of the department, who retired in September, is accused of beginning the business for profit and to gain future donors for an anticipated campaign for San Diego County Sheriff.RELATED: San Diego Sheriff's captain on leave during criminal investigationFriday morning, Magana and Hamel both plead guilty to charges including engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, false statement in acquisition of a firearm, and conducting firearms transaction in violation of state law.Both admitted to aiding Garmo's business by making "straw purchases" of firearms, or purchases of firearms on behalf of someone else. The pair also admitted to creating false records to conceal those purchases, and offering to promote Garmo's weapons. As part of his plea, Hamel admitted to buying a variety of handguns from Garmo and making purchases in which Garmo would falsely report that he had acquired the guns for himself, not Hamel. Anton is charged with also giving "kickbacks" to Garmo for referrals.Investigators accuse Tilotta, the owner of Honey Badger Firearms, with organizing Garmo's straw purchases and submitting false firearms records. While law enforcement officers are allowed to resell off roster guns in certain instances, Garmo was reportedly warned by the ATF that excessive resales for profit could violate federal law. Officials say Garmo acquired about 146 firearms between March 2013 and February 2019 and sold or transferred 104 of them.Investigators also accused Garmo of lying about tipping off a cousin, who was a partner in an illegal marijuana dispensary called Campo Greens, of an impending warrant search he had received for the business. The tip off allowed the business to clear any products or cash before authorities arrived.Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement Friday that Garmo's actions do not represent the department:"In the spring of 2017, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department learned an employee was possibly involved in misconduct. Upon confirming the information and determining the misconduct potentially involved criminal activity, the Sheriff's Department requested an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The FBI and ATF conducted a thorough investigation and the United States Attorney's Office, Southern District of California, issued indictments on one current Sheriff's employee and one former employee. I want to thank our federal law enforcement partners for their diligence on this case, and I have the utmost confidence in the criminal justice system.Acts such as these are a violation of public trust and tarnish the reputation of law enforcement. I am disappointed by the actions of these two individuals, as they do not reflect the values of this department and its thousands of trustworthy, hard-working employees. The Sheriff's Department will not tolerate criminal behavior amongst its ranks and will hold its employees accountable for their actions."Magana and Hamel are out on bail and scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21, 2020.Anton and Garmo are set to be arraigned Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 6.6% in November, down from 7.5% in October and above the year-ago estimate of 2.9%, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 7.9% for California, down from 9% in October. The rate is 6.4% for the nation, down from 6.6% during the same period.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 14,300 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,412,000 to 1,426,300 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,500 to 9,200.The region lost 97,700 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.The November data reported Friday does not include regional stay-at-home orders which Gov. Gavin Newsom put in place for California regions this month with fewer than 15% of their intensive care unit beds available. Thursday's data from the state claimed Southern California had filled its ICU beds as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens, but San Diego County health officials reported 16% of local beds were still available.Trade, transportation and utilities led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 8,200. Retail trade, up 6,500, and transportation, warehousing and utilities, up 1,800, logged increases in jobs. Within the category of retail trade, clothing and clothing accessories stores -- gained 1,500 -- and general merchandise stores -- up 1,200 -- were large contributors to month-over job gains. Wholesale trade payrolls marginally decreased by 100.Professional and business services added 2,800 jobs to payrolls and administrative, support, waste management and remediation services posted 1,900 month-over employment gains, followed by management of companies and enterprises -- up 500 -- and professional, scientific and technical services -- up 400.Also adding to payrolls was the government with 1,300 jobs added, financial activities with 1,100, educational and health services with 1,000, manufacturing with 600 and construction up 300 jobs.The hard-hit leisure and hospitality industry lost 900 jobs, and other services posted a net loss of 100 jobs in the past month.Mining and logging employment levels remained unchanged.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 45,100 jobs lost since last November -- 35,300 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 17,500 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 12,000; educational and health services 10,400; other services 9,500; manufacturing 6,400; information 3,700; and financial activities 2,400.Professional and business services gained 7,300 new jobs and construction grew payrolls by 2,000 year-over-year. 3042
