WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- NASA's car-sized Mars rover Curiosity, which will examine one of the most intriguing areas on the Red Planet, is in final preparations for a launch from Florida 's Space Coast at 10:25 a.m. EST (15:25 GMT) on Nov. 25, the U.S. space agency announced on Thursday.Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. Its 10 science instruments include two for ingesting and analyzing samples of powdered rock delivered by the rover's robotic arm. It is now sitting atop an Atlas V rocket awaiting liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station."Preparations are on track for launching at our first opportunity," said Pete Theisinger, Mars Science Laboratory project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "If weather or other factors prevent launching then, we have more opportunities through Dec. 18."Scheduled to land on the Mars in Aug. 2012, the one-ton rover will examine Gale Crater during a nearly two-year prime mission. Curiosity will land near the base of a layered mountain three miles (five kilometers) high inside the crater. The rover will investigate whether environmental conditions ever have been favorable for development of microbial life and preserved evidence of those conditions.

KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Two warships from China on Sunday docked at Kuwait's Shuwaikh port to start a five-day official visit to the Gulf Arab emirate. The tour by the destroyer "Wuhan" and the frigate "Yulin" marked the first visit by Chinese naval vessels to Kuwait since the two countries established diplomatic ties 40 years ago."This visit marks a historic occasion and Kuwaiti navy looks forward to future cooperation to improve the relationship and friendship between our two navies," said Colonel Khaled Ahmad Abdallah from Kuwait's navy. The flotilla was part of the ninth Chinese naval convoy to conclude its escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.Commander of the flotilla Guan Jianguo hopes the visit would enhance mutual cooperation between the two navies, which in turn would contribute to boosting bilateral relations. The flotilla would visit Oman after its stay in Kuwait.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Miners, construction workers and people in hotel and food service industry are most likely to smoke in the U.S., according to new research finding. The finding was contained in a report released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).According to the finding, miners and people in hotel and food service have a cigarette smoking rate of 30 percent, followed closely by construction workers' 29.7 percent. Both rates are much higher than the average smoking rate of 19.6 percent among all U.S. working adults.Workers in the education services industry have the lowest smoking rate, with 9.7 percent, followed by the 10.9 percent of workers in company management, the report said.Low education levels are a factor in high smoking rates, along with poverty and gender, said Ann Malarcher, senior scientific adviser at the CDC."Although some progress has been made in reducing smoking prevalence among working adults," the report wrote, "additional effective employer interventions need to be implemented."Smoking kills an estimated 443,000 each year in the U.S., costing about 193 billion U.S. dollars annually in direct health care expenses and productivity loss.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama announced Thursday that his administration is committing an addition 50 million U.S. dollars in funding for domestic HIV/AIDS treatment and care.Obama also set a new target of helping six million people in countries hardest hit by the HIV virus get access to life-saving antiretroviral drugs by the end of 2013, increasing the original U. S. goal by two million."We can beat this disease,"' Obama declared at a World AIDS Day event in Washington. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton also participated via satellite.Citing the success of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program in providing antiretroviral treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS around the world, Obama admitted that new infections are still not going down in the United States."The rate of new infections may be going down elsewhere, but it 's not going down here in America,'' he said. "There are communities in this country being devastated still by this disease. When new infections among young, black, gay men increase by nearly 50 percent in three years, we need to do more to show them that their lives matter.''Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also told Xinhua recently that in the United States, the AIDS epidemic has plateaued, but it is still at "unacceptably high" level.About 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV and only 28 percent of them have the infection under control, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this week."The fight is not over," Obama declared, but "the federal government can't do this alone." He called on state governments, pharmaceutical companies, and private foundations, to do their part to help Americans get access to all the life-saving treatments.Obama also appealed to global partners to step up their efforts to end AIDS, some 30 years after the epidemic first surfaced. "So on this World AIDS Day, here's my message to everyone out there. To the global community -- join us," he said.

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Global AIDS deaths and new HIV infections have each dropped 21 percent since the peak of the AIDS pandemic in 1997, according to a UN report released Monday. One major factor responsible for the result is that life-saving HIV treatments have become more popular and got to 1.35 million more people in 2010 than in 2009.In middle-income and underdeveloped nations, these treatments have saved 2.5 million lives since 1995."We have seen a massive scale-up in access to HIV treatment, which has had a dramatic effect on the lives of people everywhere," said Michel Sidibe, executive director of the U.N. AIDS program. However, 53 percent of people who need HIV/AIDS treatments -- about 7.6 million people -- cannot get them, which accounted for 1.8 million AIDS deaths in 2010.There are now 34 million people living with HIV. And just in last year there were 2.7 million new infections. The decline in deaths and new infections means the AIDS pandemic is at a turning point, the UNAIDS report argues, adding smart investment can save millions of future deaths.
