BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called on overseas-educated Chinese talents to contribute to the country's development by returning home and starting businesses.Jia, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks in his letter to Wednesday's award ceremony here for the first "Teng fei" awards.The China Western-returned Scholar Entrepreneur "Teng Fei" Award was designed to honor and reward those returned overseas-educated Chinese who had grown into enterprises leaders.The award was given to 50 excellent enterprises, 10 enterprises with vast potential, and 10 outstanding entrepreneurs.Han Qide, president of the award's co-organizer, the Western Returned Scholars Association, explained that the underlying purpose of the award was to provide a platform to promote understanding and exchange of experiences among those returnees, and to encourage, support and help more of them to launch their own careers.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China said it will make greater efforts to start six-party emergency consultations because tensions on the Korean Peninsula have not eased."The six-party talks are a very important way to advance the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in northeast Asia. We, the concerned parties, should make full use of the talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six-party talks involve China, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)."While the talks have yet to be resumed, we think it is the proper time for emergency consultations between the heads of the delegations of the six parties," said the foreign minister.Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK and the ROK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23. China proposed emergency consultations among the chief negotiators in December.Amid the international community's repeated calls for restraint and calm, the United States held separate large-scale naval drills with the ROK and Japan in waters near the peninsula."We will continue to make patient efforts to persuade the parties to engage in consultations," Yang said.He said the tensions on the peninsular will ease "only if all the parties show their sincerity and make joint efforts.""Stability on the Korean Peninsula is good for all. CHANGSHA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a fireworks blast in central China' s Hunan Province rose from an earlier announced nine to 12 after DNA tests results were completed , local authorities said Sunday night.Another two people were believed to be missing, police said, adding that three of the 12 victims were still to be identified.The blast, which also injured nine others, occurred in Ningxiang County of Changsha, the provincial capital, at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a truck loaded with fireworks fuses hit a power pole and sparks from fallen cables ignited the fuses.The blast destroyed the truck and nearby houses, shattering windows and cracking walls hundreds of meters away.Rescue work and clean-up at the site ended on Sunday, a local government spokesman said.The nine injured, who are being treated in hospital, are in stable conditions, according to the spokesman.However, the whereabouts of the truck driver remains unknown.Police continue investigating the accident.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce called for enhanced trade and economic cooperation between China and the European Union (EU), prior to Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's upcoming visit to three EU nations.In a recent interview with the People's Daily, Ministry of Commerce International Trade Representative Gao Hucheng reviewed the current trade and economic relationship between China and the EU, pinpointing the areas where more efforts could be made on both sides to further cooperation.In an article published in Wednesday's People's Daily, Gao said that in the past 35 years since China and the EU forged diplomatic ties, the relations between the two sides went from "constructive partnership" to "comprehensive partnership" and the now "comprehensive strategic partnership."The article was published about a week before Vice Premier Li sets out to visit Spain, Germany and Britain on Jan. 4-12.Trade between China and the European Union has become one of the most active and influential bilateral relations in the world, said Gao.Leaders of China and the European Union have been exchanging official visits frequently, said he. This year alone, seven of top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, paid official visits to over a dozen EU countries.Meanwhile, some 65 high-level delegations from the EU and its member states visited China in 2010.Trade cooperation between China and the EU has been speeding up, Gao said. When China established diplomatic relations with the EU in 1975, annual trade was at 2.4 billion U.S. dollars, the volume of about two days between two sides this year. In the past 35 years, trade volume has grown over 150 times.According to China's statistics, China-EU trade amounted to 433.9 billion U.S. dollars in the first 11 months of this year, up 33.1 percent from last year, a growth rate higher than that of China-Japan and China-U.S. trade.According to statistics released by the EU, its exports to China rose 4 percent in 2009 despite the economic recession and decreased export to the rest of the world. EU's total investment in China has exceeded 70 billion U.S. dollars so far, making the EU China's third largest source of foreign investment.Communication between people on two sides has grown substantially over the years. Nowadays nearly 200,000 Chinese students are studying in the EU countries and some 150,000 EU nationals are working in China. Over a million Chinese tourists travel to the EU countries every year.Gao pointed out that as the largest developing country in the world with fast economic growth, China could forge complimentary economic ties with the EU, as they stand at different places in economic development.On future economic policies, Gao said China was commited to expanding its domestic demand, adjusting its economic structure, and continuing its open-door policy, which is indispensable to China's development. He said the country's on-going economic reform offered great potential for investment and consumption, and gave other countries, including those in the EU, excellent business opportunities.Gao encouraged politicians and entrepreneurs on both sides to take a more holistic view of China-EU economic and trade relations and cooperate more actively in many sectors of the economy.
