Cottonwood, Arizona police have arrested a 32-year-old woman in what they call, "One of the worst cases of neglect some of the officers involved have ever seen."Sarah Easterday-Shortridge faces several charges in connection with the crime. On the morning of March 10, the Verde Valley Regional SWAT team served a search warrant at a home.Officers were made aware of the residence after a person received medical treatment from being pistol-whipped by a man staying at the home the night before. Police say officers found Easterday-Shortridge's three children, all under the age of five, living in "deplorable conditions." The abandoned home reportedly had feces, trash, debris, broken glass, and rotting food throughout. Officers described the residence as a "flop-house" for drug users.The children were transported to a medical center where they received treatment and hygiene. Police say the kids were suffering from lice, open sores, scabies, bumps, and were covered in feces. The Department of Child Safety was called to the scene and the children were removed from Easterday-Shortridge’s custody, police said. She has been charged with several felonies including child abuse, endangerment, neglect or abuse of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.   1326

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Customs officials in Cincinnati discovered thousands of live crabs that they said someone was trying to smuggle into the country.Agriculture specialists with U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered the invasive Chinese mitten crabs on Oct. 16 while conducting routine inspections, the agency said in a news release.The crabs are considered a seasonal delicacy in Asia, according to Customs officials. But they have had a "disastrous impact" on habitats where they've been introduced.The crabs were hidden in packages labeled as various types of clothing. They were being sent to various residences in New York. The shipments were refused entry into the U.S. Across the country, Customs agriculture specialists intercepted more than 352 pests and 4,638 quarantine materials on any given day in the fiscal year 2017, according to the agency. 877

Consumers are being warned that some over-the-counter teething products for babies can pose a serious risk.The Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday that oral health products for infants containing the pain reliever benzocaine for the temporary relief of sore gums should not be marketed or sold."If companies do not comply, the FDA will initiate a regulatory action to remove these products from the market. Also, the agency is requesting that companies add new warnings to all other benzocaine oral health products to describe certain serious risks," the FDA message says.Products with benzocaine post "serious safety risks," the FDA says. They also show no real demonstrated benefit." ... The FDA is taking steps to stop use of these products in young children and raise awareness of the risks associated with other uses of benzocaine oral health products. COLLIER COUNTY, Fla — Deputies say a trip to the ice cream store ended with a man getting scooped up by police for DUI.Deputies say 23-year-old Josh Verrot faces several charges, including DUI, battery on a first-responder and fraud. According to a Collier County Sheriff's arrest report, he was arrested Sunday evening outside the Royal Scoop ice cream shop on 8th street in the Vanderbilt Lakes community.Witnesses say that Verrot was driving recklessly in a car with two flat front tires when he pulled into the ice cream shop parking lot and went inside.  As he came out with ice cream, he heard approaching sirens and fled on foot.Deputies located him behind the store and say he refused to do sobriety tests. On the way to the hospital he reportedly bit a firefighter's finger, repeatedly spit toward authorities and yelled “blah-blah-blah” while authorities communicated with him.He also provided his brother's name when asked to identify himself.He's due in court at the end of the month. 1024
