Graduation day is a huge milestone, but this year, many students around the country won’t experience it. Amid a COVID-19 outbreak, many schools are canceling their commencement ceremonies. After four hard years of college, University of Colorado-Boulder senior Drake Olson won’t get to walk with his fellow seniors for graduation. He's just one of the many seniors across the nation that may not take part in a graduation ceremony. “A lot of my friends from out of state they have moved back home already to do online classes, so now, it’s kind of like I never got to say goodbye,” he said. What should be a time filled with joy and excitement is now a mixed bag of emotions for both Olson and his parents.Olson’s mother, Becky Olson-Kahn, feels sadness and relief for her son.“I think this is very scary time, and I really agree with the decision,” she expressed.Like many parents this spring, she won’t get the chance to watch her first-born son walk up on stage and receive his diploma.“We’re grateful he’s actually able to graduate and a way for him to complete college,” she said. “We are focused on that, but I do hope later in the summer we can have friends and family come over to celebrate.”As for what’s next for Olson and his graduating class, the university mentioned possibly postponing commencement. The college is considering including summer 2020’s class to walk in winter 2020’s graduation. 1418
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A man in Florida has been arrested after he admitted to critically injuring a newborn that was under his care after the baby woke him up shortly after a recent feeding, deputies say. Aaron James Bordelon, 29, has been charged with Felony Aggravated Battery Great Bodily Harm Child Neglect with Great Bodily Harm. The 16-day-old child is in critical condition, suffering from skull fractures and severe traumatic brain injury. Bordelon told deputies he "forcefully" picked up the baby and admitted "this is my fault." Shortly after picking up the child he said the child's physical condition deteriorated, breathing slowed and bruising under the eyes and on the eyelids was visible. Bordelon did not call for immediate medical attention at the time, according to the Sheriff's Office. When the newborn's mother arrived at their location, Bordelon ordered a Lyft ride share and took the child to Brandon Regional Hospital. According to a press release, Bordelon attempted to conceal the bruising on the newborn with makeup but the mother tried to remove it before they arrived at the emergency room, according to deputies. "Abuse in any form is unacceptable and this case is especially tragic and emotionally difficult for our detectives as it involves an innocent and defenseless child" said Sheriff Chad Chronister. 1355
Hundreds of mourners paid respects to George Floyd in his North Carolina hometown while anti-police protests continue around the U.S. Family members of Floyd gathered for the memorial service at a church about 22 miles from Floyd's hometown of Fayetteville. What the memorial below:Floyd was killed on Memorial Day while being detained by four officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. His death was captured on cell phone video, which subsequently went viral. The killing of Floyd sparked massive demonstrations in Minneapolis and across the U.S., with protesters seeking justice for Floyd and calling for changes in policing policies. The nation’s capital prepares for what is expected to be the city’s largest demonstration against police brutality yet on Saturday. Military vehicles and officers in fatigues closed off much of downtown Washington to traffic ahead of the planned march. It was expected to attract up to 200,000 people outraged by Floyd’s death 12 days ago. Following days of unrest for Floyd’s death, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced that former officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. On June 3, Ellison announced Cauvin’s murder charge was upgraded to second-degree murder. Additionally, the three other former officers seen in the video-- Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane—were also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder for their role in Floyd's death.Large protests also took place across the U.S. and in major cities overseas, including London, Paris, Berlin and Sydney, Australia. 1703
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told House Democratic caucus members during a meeting on Thursday morning that there will be a vote later in the day on a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism, multiple Democratic members said. This comes after House Democratic leaders signaled on Wednesday that the timing of a vote was uncertain amid internal debate among House Democrats over the resolution and the latest controversy surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose remarks on Israel have drawn criticism, including from some Democrats. Text of the resolution is expected to be released soon.Hoyer told reporters that the resolution will condemn all forms of hate. He said the message will be "we are against bigotry, we are against prejudice and against hate."There's a reason Democrats are pressing to vote on it Thursday.Democrats don't want Republicans to pre-empt them in taking action to address the controversy. Republicans could do that by bringing their own version of a resolution against anti-Semitism to the floor on Friday through the motion to recommit procedural vote on HR 1, a sweeping package of ethics and government reforms that Democrats have made a signature part of their agenda in the new Congress. To avoid a scenario where Democrats feel like they need to vote with Republicans Friday, a senior Democratic aide told CNN, leadership is bringing the resolution to the floor Thursday. If Republicans still push their own resolution Friday, Democrats can easily say they already voted on one and can feel more comfortable rejecting the GOP resolution.Democrats also don't want the issue to overshadow their efforts to focus attention on HR 1 Friday when it comes up for a vote.Democratic lawmakers have been engaged in what multiple Democratic sources described to CNN as a "messy" and "tense" debate behind-the-scenes over Omar and the resolution. The Minnesota lawmaker, who has not shied away from criticizing the actions of the Israeli government, is now embroiled in a backlash 2004
