SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans played the role of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday as they delivered some holiday cheer to seniors in need downtown.Volunteers from the non-profits Serving Seniors and Friends of Downtown teamed up to deliver bags filled with essentials to seniors. Bags were filled with items including food, blankets, fresh towels, and other care products.Organizers of the event say that the seniors they serve don't have families or anyone to visit them and, in some cases, this is the only present they receive during the holidays."Serving seniors sent us pictures last year and we got to see seniors receiving them and it brought tears to your eyes," Lori Carpenter, with Friends of Downtown, said.More than 200 bags were handed out during Saturday's event. 786

It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Mountain View community leaders honored the local work of a long-time resident Saturday with an honorary street.Theresa Mae "Mama T" Saunders was a resident and community member in Mountain View, helping with the development of Mountain View Park and its recreation center.In her honor, the city unveiled an honorary street sign above Ocean View Blvd. for Saunders. "Theresa Mae Saunders was a pillar of the Mountain View community," Councilmember Georgette Gómez said. "This honorary street name is one way we can commemorate her life of service to this community and to the City of San Diego."Saunders raised six children while also taking part in local volunteer work, feeding the homeless, and hosting garage sales to benefit those in need. 801
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Renters in the city of San Diego will have one final day to apply for emergency financial assistance.The deadline to apply for the city’s one-time program, which provides up to ,000 per household, is Friday, Aug. 7.Families with past due or upcoming rent payments are eligible, and payments for those who are selected are expected to be distributed in the next few weeks.Each household has to provide documentation to prove they are not currently receiving any rental subsidies.
