SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Roughly 55 million Americans are getting ready to travel for Thanksgiving weekend, leaving behind millions of empty homes. Luckily, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has a program to ensure San Diegans have peace of mind leaving their homes behind. The department offers free vacation checks year-round. From there, Senior Volunteer Patrol members keep a watchful eye of homes while residents are away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County health officials reported Friday 11 hospitalizations due to vaping. Those who have been hospitalized range from 17 to 70 years old, according to County of San Diego Communications Specialist Tom Christensen. The illnesses come as U.S. health officials urge people to stop vaping until they can determine the cause of serious breathing illnesses. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting. Some 450 cases and as many as five deaths have been identified in 33 states, including California. However, many of those who were sickened said they had been vaping THC. There's been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine. Some argue e-cigarettes are not as lethal as conventional cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and City Attorney Mara Elliott on Monday announced a new partnership that will help protect local families from gun violence.The local leaders said a program will be implemented to provide specialized gun safety training for 800 county social workers that deal with children and investigate child abuse.The training will be held virtually for these employees in the coming months. They want each of them to be familiar with gun violence restraining orders and San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms law -- two tools gun prevention advocates say are essential in keeping people safe.Carol Landale, with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, said, “The more people who are aware of how to use a gun violence restraining order, as far as we’re concerned, the better. And this is not to say we’re coming after your guns. This is not what it’s about … We remove the gun on a temporary basis -- a temporary removal for a crisis and when the crisis is done the gun can be returned.”Officials say they’re doing this now because COVID-19 has limited the interaction between children and mandated reporters like their teachers or school counselors. So, they want to make sure social workers know of danger signs when they’re present.In a news release, Elliott said, “As pandemic-related stressors mount and children attend school at homes where parents are distracted by other responsibilities, protecting families from gun violence has never been more important. Our goal is to prevent unthinkable tragedies and ensure the safety of the social workers who continue to investigate the well-being of San Diego’s children during the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Retail stores across San Diego County are preparing for more restrictions in anticipation of a move into the state's COVID-19 purple tier.For retail stores, it would mean reduced capacity to 25%.At Warwick's in La Jolla, they're setting up window displays, not just to be festive, but also to help shoppers who may not feel comfortable coming inside the book store.Owner Nancy Warwick says she would support the decision if that's what it comes down to, but acknowledges they, like most, are struggling. They've been creative, offering more online shopping, phone orders, deliveries, and contact-free purchases.She says they'll turn one set of doors into an entrance, another the exit, to maintain a flow of traffic and a count of the number of people inside the store if they have to.For Warwick, it's about making her customers feel comfortable as well as her staff, some of whom she says have not returned to work because of safety concerns.Despite that, she is confident their online offerings and their emphasis on personal shopping will help them weather this round of restrictions, if it comes to that.Being in the store, she says, is uplifting, and provides a respite for customers who are looking for nostalgia, finding gifts there that are not available elsewhere. 1302
