SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A teen suffered serious injuries after a firework he was holding exploded early Thursday morning.ABC 10News learned the incident happened at around 2 a.m. in the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, near San Diego State University.The 18-year-old male was apparently holding an M80 when it suddenly went off. The teen reportedly lost most of his fingers and suffered an injury to his foot.The teen was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment. Details on his injuries were not immediately released.No other injuries were reported in the incident. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present.He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester.While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said.While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935

Individuals with limited reading skills will have a hard time finding employment and suffer even more financially. That's why leaders in literacy are trying to encourage children to develop a love for reading before the age of 8, and before it's too late. Amelia Sandoval is a prime example of how things can spiral out of control without the ability to read. "I didn't read, not at all," says Sandoval talking about her childhood. There were problems at home. She was never read to, and school was never a priority. Without reading comprehension, the domino effect was already in motion.San Diego County Office of Education resources:100 books with strong connections to equity"I joined a gang, I hung out, I was on the streets," says Sandoval. "We learned to ditch the cops." By the time she was 18, Amelia was in the state prison for women in Chowchilla, where she spent five years. Her inability to read was her shame, and a secret she kept to herself."Just as good as I was at stealing stuff, I was good at hiding this," says Sandoval wiping away tears. "I had to protect the secret. It was the best secret I kept from everybody."But experts claim Amelia's path in life is one that's completely avoidable."60 percent of low-income children have no books at home," says Jose Cruz. "Student A" who reads just 20 minutes a day will read the equivalent of 1.8 million words in a school year, building an extensive vocabulary. But "Student B" who reads only five minutes a day will have read less than 2 percent of that amount. And "Student C" who only reads a minute a day is severely limited in vocabulary and literacy. "You just need to read and talk with your kids," says Cherissa Kreider-Beck. She is unwavering in her claim that literacy starts at home and has recommended book lists. "At the state, we're about 50 percent, so the county outperforms the state a little bit, but those numbers aren't okay. We can't be okay with those results." "If a child is not reading at grade level by age 8 or 9, the odds of them catching up are 3-1 against them," adds Cruz.
