An Elkhorn, Nebraska man accused of sending prostitutes to his neighbor's house was sentenced to four years in prison.Doug Goldsberry pleaded no contest to one count of pandering in September. On Friday, a Douglas County judge gave him the maximum penalty.The judge says Goldsberry's "screening process" by seeing how far he could get the women to go was a concern for the court.Investigators were called to a home in March. The homeowners told deputies with the Douglas County Sheriffs Office they were fearful because women identifying themselves as escorts or prostitutes had been exposing themselves and demanding money.The complaint says a family with two small children lived at the house and the women would go on their porch and strip down or lift their shirts off, and one woman urinated in their bushes.Deputies conducted surveillance and brought in two women who were seen exposing themselves at the home. The complaint says investigators were able to determine through phone records Goldsberry, who lives across the street, had sent the women and would tell them to commit the acts so he knew they weren't undercover officers.According to the complaint, Goldsberry told investigators he would watch the girls out of his kitchen window, which faced his neighbor's porch, and sometimes take pictures and would become sexually aroused. He also told investigators he would meet prostitutes at hotels, the complaint says. 1451

As Major League Baseball threw out the first pitch Thursday night, MLB announced that the player’s association and league have agreed to a 16-team playoff for this season only. This expands it from the normal 10 teams. The decision makes it possible, if not likely, that teams with losing records will reach the postseason. Sixteen of the 30 teams will advance to a best-of-three first round. MLB agreed to guarantee a postseason pool that would be million if the entire postseason is played. The pool usually comprises ticket money, but baseball anticipates playing the entire year in empty ballparks due to the coronavirus.Details about how the playoff match-ups would be decided is still being discussed, according to media reports. There is a proposal being considered, according to ESPN, that some of the playoff teams could pick their opponents. Another nationwide retailer is filing for bankruptcy amidst the pandemic.Stein Mart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections Wednesday, citing the current situation in retail during the coronavirus pandemic.“The combined effects of a challenging retail environment coupled with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant financial distress on our business,” said Hunt Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer of Stein Mart, Inc. in a statement from the company. “The Company lacks sufficient liquidity to continue operating in the ordinary course of business. I would like to thank all of our employees for their dedication and support.”Stein Mart says they expect to close most, if not all, of their 281 stores and they have launched a “store closing and liquidation process.” The first store opened in 1908 in Mississippi.The discount department store says they are looking at possibly selling their website and intellectual property during the Chapter 11 process.Stein Mart adds to the list of several retailer who have announced bankruptcy filings or closings, including Tuesday Morning, JCPenney, Sur La Table, Mens Warehouse, Ann Taylor and Lord & Taylor. 1199

AMPA, Fla. — Tampa police have charged a mother with first-degree murder after police say she drowned her daughter in the Hillsborough River, killing her.Shakayla Denson, 26, has been arrested and charged with first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of 4-year-old Je'Hyrah Daniels. She also faces a charge of grand theft auto.Denson made a first appearance in court on Friday morning.  A judge set no bond on the charges of murder and child abuse.Tampa Police officers responded around 4:06 p.m. local time Thursday after receiving reports of a woman who drowned a child in the river just north of the Columbus Drive bridge. The dive team also responded to the scene where they pulled Je'Hyrah from the water around 4:30 p.m. She was discovered approximately 75 feet from the shore. Emergency services rushed her to St. Joseph's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  Police say Denson was located walking nearby when they took her into custody. Investigators say Denson had just stolen a car - a grey Nissan Altima - from a nearby auto repair shop. She parked the car on Rome Avenue just north of Aileen Street. Witness AccountsAccording to an arrest affidavit released Friday morning, two witnesses said Denson "forcefully pushed Je'Hyrah into the back seat of the Nissan Altima." One of the witnesses attempted to stop Denson from leaving but was struck by the Altima as she left. Two other witnesses told police they saw Denson near Aileen St W and Rome Avenue N where she "forcefully removed Je'Hyrah from the back seat of the Altima by the arm." They said as Denson pulled Je'Hyrah she was "screaming loudly and not cooperating." Denson then went into the Hillsborough River while holding both of Je'Hyrah's arm until the water reached her shoulders.Vicki Walker lives on the 3rd floor of the Dockside Condos in Tampa, directly facing where police say Je'Hyrah was drowned.She told said that she never saw the child, but spotted a woman walking out of water not long before police arrived.“Which was very odd, I’ve lived here for years, I’ve never seen anybody in the river," she said.Walker took a photo of the woman in the river.Walker says that the woman was by herself and that she watched her walk out of the river onto the bank, where she says the woman sat for a while.“There’s a part of me that’s like ‘oh my gosh, why didn’t I run over there? Why didn’t I talk to this person? (AP) — A 30th horse has died at Santa Anita on the last weekend of racing before the Southern California track closes for the season.Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board, says a 4-year-old gelding named American Currency was injured Saturday while exercising on the training track and was euthanized.The board had recommended that Santa Anita suspend the current meet following a string of deaths since Dec. 26, but management chose to continue until the last day of the meet on Sunday.Track owner, The Stronach Group, formed a panel to review horses' medical, training and racing history for the final six racing days.But Marten says American Currency wasn't entered to run in any race and thus wasn't subject to review by the panel.The horse is the fourth from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to die at the track. Hollendorfer was banned from Santa Anita following the latest death.The Stronch Group said in a statement that Hollendorfer "is no longer welcome to stable, race or train his horses at any of our facilities."On the recommendation of the special panel, the track's stewards scratched four horses trained by Hollendorfer that were to run Saturday and Sunday. 1244
