A massive fire broke out in Queens, New York on Thursday morning — a blaze that has injured at least 12 people, including seven firefighters.NBC New York reports that 25 fire departments responded to the fire, which started in the Sunnyside neighborhood in Queens. A new complaint has been filed against casino owner Steve Wynn.The complaint was filed by a woman identified only as "Jane Doe." According to the complaint, the woman was an employee for The Claude Baruk Salon in 2015 when she began giving manicures and pedicures to Wynn.She says that Wynn would require her to position herself in certain ways during the services that would put her in direct contact with body parts other than his hands or feet. When she would attempt to withdraw, he would become irritated.According to the complaint, Jane Doe went to Claude Baruk and other members of management. She says that Baruk ignored her complaints but she was told by other members of management that it would stop.Jane Doe says she also shared what happened with her coworkers and heard similar stories. The woman says that she feared that she would lose her job if she kept complaining.After the story broke in the Washington Post, the woman says that Wynn visited the salon twice to speak with salon employees.The first time was on Jan. 27. Wynn reportedly requested the employees to be gathered and then asked them to raise their hands if they felt he had ever assaulted them.The second time was on Feb. 1 during a birthday party for a salon employee. Jane Doe says Wynn brought a video crew with him that time and demanded that employees give video statements saying he did nothing wrong.The complaint also says that Wynn is still receiving manicures and pedicures in the salon or in his on-site villa.The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday with the Clark County District Court. Two lawsuits were filed last week by massage therapists who also accused Wynn of inappropriate conduct.Wynn resigned as CEO of Wynn Resorts last month. He is denying all allegations but said that he did not believe he could be an effective company leader.He also resigned as chairman for the Republican National Committee.  1915

A pre-teen's basketball shot from beyond the arc was good for more than just a few points in Springfield.Springfield police say a group of ten-to-twelve-year-old kids helped them catch a suspected burglar on the run. It all started after officers responded to a call for a burglary. Police say they received reports that a 50-year-old male had just broken into a garage and stole several items, including two weed trimmers before taking off on a bike. He dropped the lawn tools after encountering police and rode awat. According to a post from the Springfield Police Department, the first officer followed him in his patrol car until backup arrived and started chasing him on foot.That's where the young All-Stars come into play.  Police say the kids were playing basketball nearby and one of them "threw a basketball across the roadway at the suspect, striking him, causing him to wreck his bicycle in the grass."Officers were then able to book the suspect into custody for burglary.  1033

A police officer who claimed she killed a Dallas man in his own apartment in the mistaken belief that he was in her home has been indicted on a charge of manslaughterThe indictment of Amber Guyger comes more than two months after she was arrested in the shooting death of Botham Shem Jean at the Dallas apartment complex where both lived -- a killing that sparked days of protests.Guyger, who was arrested and fired from her job as a Dallas police officer after the September shooting, initially faced a charge of manslaughter. But Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson had said a grand jury could issue a stiffer charge.A charge of manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.Botham Jean's family had wanted Guyger to be indicted for murder, their attorney Daryl Washington told CNN.Guyger, who is white, was off-duty when she encountered Jean, an 26-year-old unarmed black man, in his apartment on September 6, police said. Still in her uniform, Guyger parked her car in the complex and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.The door was slightly ajar as she tried to use her key, which has an electronic chip. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was almost completely dark, according to the affidavit. She described seeing a large silhouette and, believing there was an intruder in her apartment, drew her firearm.She issued verbal commands, but Jean, being in his own home, did not heed them, and Guyger fired two shots, hitting him once in the torso, the affidavit said.Guyger, a four-year veteran, then entered the apartment, called 911 and started administering first aid to Jean. She turned on the lights while on the phone with 911, and only when asked for her address did she realize she was in the wrong apartment, she told police.Jean died at a hospital. Guyger was arrested September 9 on suspicion on manslaughter, and was released from the Kaufman County Jail after posting a 0,000 bond.The Dallas Police Department fired Guyger during a hearing September 24, the police chief said.The shooting sparked days of protest. A surge in COVID-19 cases is further straining the already-depleted supply of prescription drugs in the U.S., according to researchers and doctors at the University of Minnesota."The supply lines are really stressed and stretched," said Dr. Stephen Schondelmeyer, a co-principal investigator for the Resilient Drug Supply Project at the University of Minnesota.Schondelmeyer's work focuses on critical drugs and their supply chains. He tracks the supply chain process for every drug on the marketplace — more than 100,000 in total.Most of the prescription drugs used by Americans are made outside of the country — meaning the U.S. is reliant on foreign companies to manufacture the drug and shipping companies to deliver them safely."We're identifying where it comes from — the first thing you need to know is about 70% of all the drugs that come into the U.S. marketplace are made outside of the US.," Schondelmeyer said.He and his team want to predict and identify when and where there will be failures in the system. Right now, the U.S. has a "fail and fix" system — and right now, there are some critical breakdowns in the supply chain."Seventy-five percent of the COVID-19 drugs are currently in shortage," Schondelmeyer said. "That means three-fourths of the drugs we're using for COVID-19 were already in shortage, and that's before we had this last surge we're seeing.""We should, as a matter of national policy, have a map like we're building of the global drug supply from the beginning all the way until the drug reaches the patient," Schondelmeyer said.But it's not just COVID-19 drugs that are in short supply. Dr. Beth Thielen, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School and an infectious disease physician, says even some routine drugs are hard to come by."As a physician working in the hospital — the University of Minnesota — we're a big urban center and yet we're regularly dealing with this issue of shortages in routine things like antibiotics," Thielen said. "It's very concerning to think about the supply chain breaking down and seeing drugs not available in pharmacies or the hospital."Doctors say COVID-19 has unmasked a problem that's been a concern for decades. The pharmaceutical supply chain is complicated and dependent on other countries — and there are supply and demand dilemmas."Start the conversation now with your healthcare provider," Thielen said. "There might be some within class substitutions of medicines, so a drug that is related may not be the exact same drug but might fulfill the same purpose."Schondelmeyer adds that anyone with a regular prescription should ask their doctor about getting a 90-day supply of essential drugs — but adds that there's no reason to hoard medication."We shouldn't panic. We shouldn't treat drugs like we did toilet paper and stock up on so much that we're totally out — and that's an example of what can happen when there's rumors of shortages," Schondelmeyer said. "People act out of fear, and they hoard more than they really need."In the meantime, Schondelmeyer is pushing for a national stockpile of critical medications, so that the U.S. is covered should there be a complete breakdown in the supply chain. 3236
