BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia would strengthen coordination to better implement the regional cooperation program approved by state leaders last year, officials from the two countries said here on Sunday.The statement was made by Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Administration and vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, and representatives of the Russian government, at the China-Russian regional cooperation symposium.In September 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev approved the cooperation program between northeast China and Russia's far east and east Siberian region.Zhang said the cooperation program, covering many fields, included more than 300 key projects in local cooperation and infrastructure construction and transformation.The symposium is the first bilateral meeting aimed at promoting China-Russian regional cooperation since the approval of the cooperation program.

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Information and Technology (MIIT) issued a guideline Sunday, urging the nation's auto producers to establish quality accountability mechanism to improve quality management.The MIIT warned auto production enterprises against blind expansion, urging them to focus more on technology upgrade and improve product quality by using "new technology, new technics, new equipment and new materials."Auto producers were also asked to strengthen after-sale service, setting up an accountability mechanism to timely recall and deal with the faulty products.As China's auto industry is at a stage of rapid development, it should take effective measures to ensure product quality, so as to prompt the industry to develop in a sound and healthy way, said an official with the MIIT.Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed that new auto sales rose 46.15 percent year on year to 13.64 million units in 2009 in China, helping the country overtake the United States as the world's largest auto market.

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China's year-on-year inflation rate was expected to be between 2 to 2.5 percent for the first quarter this year, the country's top economic planner said here Tuesday.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, would see a "moderate increase" in the first quarter, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement on its website.China's CPI rose 2.7 percent from a year earlier in February, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.Food prices would begin to fall as the weather got warmer, said the statement. In February, food prices rose 6.2 percent from the previous year due to the Lunar New Year holiday and poor weather.The Lunar New Year holiday, or Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival in China for family reunion. People usually spend a lot on food, alcohol, cigarettes and gifts during the period.The February CPI was within normal range, compared with the Spring Festival months in previous years, said Zhou Wangjun, deputy director of the Department of Prices of the NDRC.However, Zhou warned that there were still uncertainties in the price trend, including fluctuation in international commodities prices.China targets a consumer price rise of around 3 percent this year, according to a government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao at the opening of the annual session of the National People's Congress earlier this month.

  

SHANGHAI, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo has urged Shanghai to take the opportunity of hosting the World Expo to pioneer the country's transformation of economic development mode. Wu visited Shanghai from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1.Accompanied by Yu Zhengsheng, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wu visited the Expo Site as well as some high and new tech enterprises in the city.Shanghai must spare no effort in hosting the Expo and seize the opportunity to promote economic restructuring and industrial structural upgrading, to boost the development of modern service industry, and to speed up fostering emerging strategic industries, Wu said."Wu must make technological breakthroughs, speed up industrialization process, and develop emerging industries such as smart grid, low-carbon technology and biomedicine, so as to make sure the country can have the initiative in the new round of international economic competition," Wu said.The 2010 World Expo was scheduled to be held from May 1 to Oct. 31 in Shanghai, expected to attract a record total of 70 million visitors from home and abroad.

  

BEIJING, March 22 -- The cities of Chengdu and Chongqing are famous for their different kinds of hot pots and there are endless arguments about which one is more delicious or spicier. Construction is slated to start this year.The "one hour circle" is part of the plan for the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone, and the overall development project will be approved by the central government this year, according to this year's sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The two cities will generate more synergies in the future.Migrant workers from Qinghai province pick cotton in a field in Hami, in neighboring Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Xinjiang is the country's biggest cotton producing center.The State Council, China's cabinet, has sparked a new wave of regional development by laying out a dozen regional development plans with policy or financial support since last year.The Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta have acted as leading engines in the development of China's prosperous coastal areas. China is keen on fostering more driving forces to boost central and western regions to catch up.In January, the Wanjiang River Urban Belt in Anhui province was positioned as a national-level industrial transfer demonstration zone, and Hainan province was targeted to be transformed into an international tourist destination last December.Other western regions such as the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and Tibet autonomous region have also become recent hot subjects for investment. Similarly, development plans for the two regions are being formulated and are very likely to be released this year or next.
