SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Termed-out San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman is taking aim at what he says is too much outside influence behind the scenes at City Hall.In an interview with ABC 10News, Sherman said too many of his colleagues vote based on their own political preservation."Unfortunately, too many politicians are looking down the road and at what office they are going to run for next," Sherman said. In a recent op-ed, Sherman said in politics he has learned that handshakes and signed memos are worth a "bucket of spit." He said political gadflies, union reps, party reps and political donors are wielding too much power of council members. Sherman believes this is the reason the city still has not come to an agreement on regulating short-term rentals, and is approving labor-friendly development projects."One of the things that bothered me the most in politics is how different special interest groups can literally come down, sit in the front row, and dictate to council members what they will and won't do if they want their support in the future, and unfortunately most of them do," Sherman said. Sherman said he is the exception because he did not base his council career on a run for higher office. He did run for mayor in 2020, losing in the primary. But he said chose to run because of encouragement, and because no other Republican entered the race. Michael Zucchet, who heads the city's Municipal Employees Association, said Sherman and other politicians generally define "special interests" as those that disagree with them. "I wasn't very moved by his comments and they struck me as sour grapes," Zucchet said in an email. "It seems like pure hypocrisy to me. Not to mention baseless, transparent whining."Sherman, who represented the Mission Valley area, is now going back into insurance sales. His departure will leave Chris Cate as the only Republican on the City Council because Sherman's seat flipped to Democrat in the November election. 1978

Dan King told reporters, "I just want to give perspective on what it's like to be a firefighter and to have cancer. Unfortunately, that's me. Two years ago today. I was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation; pretty extensive treatment. For me, the treatment was very long and very painful."His remarks were during a news conference about a fund-raiser to upgrade the equipment at Firehouse 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday.Imagine the health risks — every day."Firefighters can experience a lifetime of environmental exposures in a compressed period of time. It may happen at just one fire or, in many cases, chronic exposure over the course of a long career," Firefighter Kurtis Bennett, part of The Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, said. To fight that the Pacific Beach Town Council wants to raise ,000 to augment city funding.San Diego City Council leader for District 2, Lorie Zapf, told the crowd, "I wish we had more revenue, more money so we could take care of all these equipment needs."Firehouse 21 would benefit directly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego could go to court to invalidate a landmark pension reform measure that voters overwhelmingly supported in 2012.The City Council is expected to meet in closed session the week June 10 to decide whether to ask a judge to throw out Measure B. The measure switched most new hires from pensions to 401(k) style retirement plans. More than 65 percent of San Diego voters supported Measure B in 2012. The problem, however, is that the measure got to the ballot via a citizens initiative, but then-Mayor Jerry Sanders campaigned on its behalf. Labor unions challenged the initiative in court, contending the mayor's involvement meant the city needed to meet and confer with them. The state Supreme Court agreed, and an appellate court ordered the city to make its employees whole, plus pay them 7 percent interest. The courts, however, did not invalidate Measure B, instead directing the city to work out a compromise with the unions. On Thursday, City Councilman Scott Sherman and former Councilman Carl DeMaio held a news conference pushing the city to protect Measure B."Right now we are being asked to go against what our bosses told us, and I don't think we should do that," Sherman said, adding that the city spends 0 million a year now meeting its minimum pension obligations. DeMaio said he would work with a coalition to go to court to protect Measure B. "I'm talking about putting the City of San Diego back on the brink of bankruptcy, let alone telling voters that they don't have a say on where their tax dollars go," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The door-to-door salesman accused of taking swings at a Pacific Beach woman and a string of threatening outbursts while canvassing neighborhoods is behind bars.An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 6, 2019, for 45-year-old Corey Lamont Terry on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. According to San Diego Police, Terry was arrested by Sheriff's deputies on Jan. 9. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.RELATED: Woman records confrontation with man claiming to be charity worker Police had been investigating Terry since November 2019 after several San Diegans complained of his aggressive language while he solicited money door-to-door, SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi told 10News. Terry had reportedly been visiting neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, claiming to be raising money for charity.Several people told 10News he would become aggressive when he was denied donations."He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Sarah Jarzabek told 10News. "Scared to death, honestly."Jarzabek recorded video of a confrontation with Terry on Nov. 2, 2019. SDPD positively identified the man who reportedly swung at Jarzabek as Terry. He was detained and questioned the next day, but ultimately released.“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered Terry on Oct. 16, 2019. “Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names.
