A high school basketball game between two Santa Maria, California, rival teams ended with students in the stands taunting the other team and a confrontation between school administrators. As the seconds counted down to the final buzzer, the matchup between Righetti and St. Joseph high schools became much more than just a game. A fast-moving line of severe storms known as a derecho stretched from the Midwest to the South Carolina coastline, leaving three people dead and more than 350 damage reports in its wake.The extreme weather phenomena started in central Nebraska in the predawn hours on Friday and traveled all the way to Charleston by Saturday morning.Shelf clouds were seen along the line of storms. Major US cities, such as Kansas City and St. Louis, got a taste of strong winds and heavy rain from these apocalyptic-looking clouds.The term "derecho" is Spanish for the word straight. It was first defined by physicist Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs in his paper in the American Meteorological Journal in 1888.The National Weather Service defines derechos as "widespread, long-lived wind storms associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms."Hurricane force winds and flash flooding are typical of derechos.More than 14 states felt the impact of the storm.Three people were killed Friday as a result of winds toppling trees onto vehicles and a boat, according to authorities.The Kansas City Fire Department responded to a water rescue early Friday morning as streets in downtown flooded from the storms, CNN affiliate KMBC reported.The National Weather Service in St. Louis tweeted that one of its radar sites was struck by lightning as the storms approached, resulting in a 30 minute outage.In Nashville, Tennessee, the storms toppled tents in downtown that were set up for Pride festival events this weekend, according to images posted on social media.The threat of severe storms is not over. A Cincinnati teenager's trip to Santa's Wonderland today did not turn out as expected.13-year-old Carlo Averion showed up, and received a life-changing gift: digital glasses to help him see again. Averion suffers from Stargardt's Disease, a progressive disease that's causing him to lose his sight. The disease causes macular degeneration, and currently there is no cure for it. The glasses are manufactured by a company called E-Sight, and their website claims the glasses work through a mix of optical and computer technology "to stimulate he remaining photoreceptors in your eyes, sending more information to the brain and enhancing your ability to see clearly." These glasses were purchased with a combination of donated funds and grant money. "We have people that donated and we don't even know who they are, and we're very grateful for their generosity," said Lisa Averion, Carlo's mother. Carlo says he's excited to be able to see again, but he still has one simple wish:"When school starts back up, I just want to sit at my desk and read something on the board," he said. "It's really just the small things that I want to look at that people normally take for granted in life." The glasses were provided for Carlo thropugh donations, and a grant from the First Hand Foundation, a non-profit that helps provide children with health-related needs. 1366
