LEMON GROVE (CNS) - A man was jailed for stealing a deputy's patrol car at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station, sheriff's officials said Sunday. Matthew Brian Porter, 44, was arrested Saturday evening and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of evading deputies, theft of an emergency vehicle and fleeing police on a highway in the wrong direction, all felonies, according to jail records. At about 9 p.m., a deputy at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station was unloading his patrol car at the end of his shift, according to Lt. Mike Rand of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A man then got into the deputy's patrol car and drove away. Deputies spotted the vehicle leaving the station and began a pursuit. But they lost sight of it as it drove eastbound on Broadway. A resident called 911 to report the abandoned patrol car in the 3500 block of Grove Street. Deputies located the vehicle and detained Porter, who allegedly admitted to stealing the patrol car. Porter's bail on the evading charge was set at ,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. 1080

LINKSFIND YOUR POLLING PLACE TRACK YOUR BALLOT ELECTION GUIDESAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In the March primary election, election officials in California had to disqualify 102,428 mail-in ballots, or about 1.5 percent. So how do you ensure your vote gets counted? The very first step is to make sure you are registered to vote. Voters in San Diego County can do so at sdvote.com. Californians in other counties should visit vote.ca.gov.The deadline to register is October 19.The second thing you want to do is make a plan for how you will vote, either by mail or in-person.“Our recommendation, particularly with the pandemic, is to vote by mail in this upcoming election,” said San Diego County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu.Because of the pandemic, election officials are sending mail-in ballots to every active, registered voter in California for the first time in state history. As long as you’re registered by October 19, you’ll get one, Vu said. When you’re making your selections, “clearly mark that ballot, similar to when you’re going to a polling place with an ink pen. Black or blue is preferred,” Vu said.Once filled out, seal the ballot in the pre-paid return envelope and sign the back. Seriously. Don’t forget.Missing or mismatched signatures, meaning the signature on the ballot doesn’t match the one on file, are the second most common reason mail ballots get disqualified. The number one reason is that they’re sent back too late. Ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day, November 3.“Fill it out at your leisure. But send it back with plenty of time just to make sure that it's postmarked on or before Election Day in order to count,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla. You can return the ballot to the post office or a mail-ballot drop-off location. There are 126 drop-off locations in San Diego County. You can also drop it off at a polling place. If mail ballots aren’t your thing, you can still vote in-person at the polls. Every polling location will open up to three days early, on October 31.Voters can also cast an in-person ballot at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office as of October 5. The office is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.“If you choose to vote in person. Don't wait for the last day. Go the very first day that voting locations are open,” Secretary Padilla said.If you’re going to the polls in person, make sure to double check the location. Your assigned polling place has probably changed from previous elections. In San Diego County, they’ve gone from 1,548 locations last cycle to just 235, but election workers are bringing in larger venues, like Viejas Arena and the Convention Center.“They’re strategically located. No less than 2,000 square feet in the majority of these locations to allow for physical distancing,” Vu said.Vu said by shrinking the number of polling locations, they’re able to have the polls open for four days rather than one, which he hopes will help spread out voters and mitigate the risk of the virus. For the first time statewide, you can sign up to track your ballot through a new tool called Where’s My Ballot? The system will send text alerts and emails when your ballot is mailed, when election officials receive it, when it’s been counted, and if there are any issues with your ballot that can be corrected, such as a missing signature.“Do a little bit of homework, know the process. Decide how you're going to vote and do it early,” Padilla said.A record 72 percent of California ballots were cast by mail in the March primary, so election officials are used to the process. But they’re still urging voters to have patience for a long count. Registrar Vu said he plans to take the full 30 days to certify the results. 3743

LAKESIDE, Calif. (CNS) - Barona Resort & Casino announced Monday it is canceling its annual New Year's Eve and New Year's Day celebrations in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The casino issued a statement indicating it was canceling the events "in an abundance of caution and to protect the safety and well-being of players, staff and the greater San Diego community.""Ringing in the New Year is something we look forward to every year and we are very disappointed that we won't be able to host a 2021 celebration this year," Barona General Manager Rick Salinas said. "Since reopening the casino back in May, we have carefully managed capacity to ensure social distancing and have also postponed all events and promotions that might attract crowds. As it has been throughout the pandemic, our focus is on protecting the health and wellness of our players and staff, and we believe canceling our much- loved New Year's celebration is in the best interest of our staff, our players and everyone."The casino otherwise remains open under its own health and safety plan that includes increased and continuous disinfecting and cleaning protocols, limiting capacity, social distancing policies, mandatory facial coverings for all staff and players, infrared temperature checks, and property-wide health and hygiene reminders."We look forward to the return of our signature celebrations as soon as it is safe to do so," Salinas said. “Until then, Barona will remain vigilant in adhering to our protocols and doing everything we can to stop the spread of COVID-19. Be careful and stay safe.” 1600

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two women on vacation in San Diego had their trip ruined when thieves stole all of their luggage.Vivia Bradshaw and Yvonne Simpson live in Florida and New York. For the last 15 years, they've made regular trips to San Diego."We’re always coming back, it is so beautiful, we love the weather especially," says Simpson. "Everything's so beautiful. We've never had a terrible experience coming here before."But their trip this past week turn a turn for the worse on Saturday, while they were visiting with a friend in La Mesa.Simpson and Bradshaw say they had put their luggage in their friend's car at the Woodland Terrace Apartments while they visited his home."When we were ready to leave, I came back to the car and saw something a little strange," says Simpson. "I asked him, was that open? And he saw right away that someone had entered the car. I said check the trunk. He did, all our suitcases were gone. Every last piece. Three of them!"Thieves took all of their clothes, money, gift cards, jewelry, shoes, purses and personal items."Everything's gone," says Simpson. "We know they're replaceable, but it's the sentiment."The two women have been able to buy new clothes and necessities. Now they're trying to make the most out of their week-long trip. They've filed a police report as well. La Mesa Police says they hope surveillance footage can help identify a suspect.Meanwhile, Bradshaw and Simpson have a warning for others."Just be careful," says Bradshaw. "It doesn’t matter where you are. Just be aware there could be someone lurking, looking to take something."For information on car break-ins and how to prevent them, click here. 1677
