SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is suspending spring 2020 programs to Italy amid the spread of the novel coronavirus. The university said in an update to students Monday that it was calling all students studying abroad in Italy back to the United States. The decision was made due to the elevated level three travel advisories the CDC and State Department issued for the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Six people inside a minivan that drove down a flooded road near Fashion Valley mall were rescued Friday, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official. Avenida del Rio, a popular exit route for the mall south of Friars Road, was closed Thursday and Friday due to rising water levels in the San Diego River. A lifeguard river rescue crew was nearby, along with fire trucks. No one was hurt, fire officials said.Police say the car was driven by a rideshare driver who had picked up five women at the mall who were all visiting from out of the country.There are barriers on the south side of Fashion Valley mall indicating the road is closed. 854

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a Chula Vista woman killed her mother in a Mission Valley office building, then shot herself days later with the same gun.Homicide detectives investigated the 911 call from an office building on Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley on July 22.Officers found Maria Kelly, 66, dead inside her office.RELATED: SDPD: Mother murdered, daughter deadKelly's 34-year-old daughter, Crystal Vasquez, drove to the location hours later.Vasquez went into the restroom of a nearby business and was discovered dead of a gunshot wound.San Diego Police said Vasquez shot and killed her mother the afternoon of July 20. The next day, Vasquez cashed a ,000 check written from her mother's bank account.Police told 10News the Vasquez likely shot her mother after being confronted about stealing money from the family business. Vasquez embezzled money from her mother's Mission Valley accounting business for about a year, according to police. Police believe Vasquez shot herself after learning about the possibility of cameras at the building's entry and exit.A forensic examination confirmed the handgun Vasquez used to commit suicide was the same gun used to kill Kelly.  Video surveillance also showed Vasquez was in the office with Kelly at the time of the murder. 1330

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — State officials hope California’s new 10 p.m. stay-at-home order will slow the spread of COVID-19, otherwise, another 10,000 San Diegans are projected to contract the virus in the next 10 days.That’s according to a new county-by-county forecast from Facebook, which rolled out the prediction software last month.Facebook projects L.A. County will see the second-largest increase in cases in the country by November 30. San Diego County is projected to add the 15th most cases, reaching a total of 78,594 infections by Nov. 30.The two-week forecast was released before Governor Gavin Newsom announced enhanced restrictions. Facebook will release a new two-week forecast next week.“Many other forecasts around the world are only predicting caseload at a country or state level,” said Laura McGorman with Facebook’s Data for Good team. “We’re trying to be much more local in this approach because we know so much of the COVID-19 response is in fact local.”McGorman said the forecast tool could help county and state officials plan hospital bed space, ICU capacity, ventilators and other critical supplies.The map is powered by artificial intelligence that draws on seven kinds of data. They use outside metrics like confirmed cases, doctor visits and the weather combined with information Facebook collects like a survey of people’s symptoms and GPS location data.The location data helps gauge whether people are staying home and isolating or circulating among the community, according to McGorman.Facebook only pulls data from users who opt in and no, they’re not reading your posts. All of the information, which is aggregated to the county or state level to protect privacy, is available for the public to download.The tech giant initially started Data for Good three years ago to help with disaster-relief projects, McGorman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego student Emily Benkes says her mother has lived in their Carmel Mountain home for 32 years, never once feeling unsafe in the neighborhood.Tuesday, Benkes came home to a ransacked house. “We had our laptops out, I had some money on my desk, Xbox was gone, my Apple TV,” said Benkes. Benkes believes the person hopped their backyard fence, coming in from a nearby trail. Food was missing from the fridge, including a package of salami which they later found on the trail. The suspect entered the home by throwing a rock through the back window and climbing in. “I felt really violated, I couldn’t even go in my room just because I kept thinking that there was somebody in here going through my stuff,” Benkes.She posted what happened on Nextdoor, and now neighbors are trying to help; one neighbor believes their surveillance video captured someone hopping the fence. “I hope we catch this person and nobody else has this happen to them,” said Benkes. The family estimates several thousand dollars worth of goods were stolen; they have filed a report with the San Diego Police Department. 1122
