SEATTLE, Wash. — MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says she has given away .1 billion in the past four months to hundreds of organizations as part of a giving pledge she announced last year.The Seattle Times reports Scott announced her pandemic-era philanthropy in a Medium post Tuesday, writing that the pandemic has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires, while things have gotten worse for women, people of color and those living in poverty.The philanthropist and author says she asked a team of advisers to help her “accelerate” her 2020 giving with immediate help to those financially gutted by the pandemic.She says the team used a data-driven approach, identifying organizations specifically in communities with high food insecurity, racial inequity and other factors.As a result, Scott says billions of dollars in “gifts” have been given to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.“Some are filling basic needs: food banks, emergency relief funds, and support services for those most vulnerable,” wrote Scott. “Others are addressing long-term systemic inequities that have been deepened by the crisis: debt relief, employment training, credit and financial services for under-resourced communities, education for historically marginalized and underserved people, civil rights advocacy groups, and legal defense funds that take on institutional discrimination.”Click here to learn more about which organizations benefited from Scott’s donations. 1534

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - Several people in a San Marcos gated community have reported being targets of package thieves, according to one victim who spoke with 10News. The Sheriff's Department is looking at surveillance video, which appears to provide several leads.Mikayla Manos says a package was sent to her home on Almond Drive Friday.  Manos is a mentor for foster children. The package contained the personal items of one of those children, which she was asked to deliver to him.  When Manos arrived home, she did not see the package.Manos checked with her next-door neighbor, who has a surveillance camera. Video from Friday afternoon shows a girl walking past Manos' home. She turns and points toward Manos' porch and can be heard saying "get it".The video shows what appears to be a boy picking something up from Manos' porch, although the package cannot be clearly seen from the camera angle. At least two voices can be heard off camera. One is heard saying "I can't wait to wear these to school tomorrow." Manos says clothes are among the items stolen.Manos says she knows of at least three other neighbors who were victims.  10News spotted an empty Nordstrom bag ripped open on one neighbor's porch, while another neighbor tells 10News someone stole items from his garage when he briefly left it open around the same time.Several package boxes were found dumped nearby, including Manos'. Scientists have discovered a pocket sized dinosaur forerunner that was just 4 inches tall. Named Kongonaphon kely, which means tiny bug slayer, the creature looked like a dinosaur but scampered the Earth earlier, predating both dinosaurs and flying pterosaurs. The fossils, dug up in Madagascar, date from 237 million years ago, according to a study Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 429

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - At least one person is dead after a collision with a tree off a South Bay freeway split their vehicle in two overnight.The crash occurred just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the southbound Interstate 805 connector to State Route 905 in San Ysidro, according to California Highway Patrol.Officers said the driver, who has yet to be identified, was traveling southbound on I-805 when he hit a tree. The collision split the vehicle in two and sending half of the vehicle into the westbound lanes of I-905.CHP officers said a portion of the vehicle also caught fire.The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to officers. SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) - The captain of the sister ship to the one that caught fire off the coast of Santa Barbara, killing at least 25, is sticking up for its crew.Ian Higgins is the captain of the Vision, a sister ship nearly identical to the Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz island Monday morning. Higgins spoke to 10News after media reports calling the safety protocol of the Conception into question."That vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard annually and also every five years for a more complete inspection," said Higgins, who works for Truth Aquatics. "If you think the Coast Guard would allow a vessel carrying that many passengers to operate without any type of fire suppression system, I don’t know what one would believe."RELATED: 20 bodies recovered from boat fire off coast of Southern California, officials sayRecords show the Conception had no issues after a Coast Guard inspection in February. Higgins said any report that the passengers were locked in the ship is patently false. He said passengers are given safety briefings the morning after they get on the ship.
