SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The floral tributes shut down by the pandemic, blossomed into reality Memorial Day at several national cemeteries.Susan Williams first met Gregory Torres in 1973 while he was in the Air Force navigator training program. While the relationship didn't last, she never forgot him."Funny, smart and dedicated. One of the best people I've ever known," said Williams, 71.In 1978, while stationed in Germany, Captain Torres died when his plane crashed during a training flight. He was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.Williams, who lives in South Carolina, had plans to visit his grave this Memorial Day before the pandemic hit.Covid-19 also turned the usual local services virtual. The flags laid out by the cemetery and flowers put out by a national nonprofit wouldn't happen this year."It made me feel crummy. He should be remembered in some way," said Williams.Enter Jenelle Brinneman, a Valley Center florist who started a Gofundme campaign. After a 10news story, the campaign took off. Some ,000 and countless roses, Brinneman and a small group of volunteers spent the morning of Memorial Day laying a single rose at some 4000 grave markers between Fort Rosecrans and Miramar cemeteries."We're laying down these roses and people are crying, thanking us. Just so cool to be part of this. The feeling is just overwhelming," said Brinneman.Brinneman's group also set down 200 bouquets at gravestones, special requests submitted for Memorial Day. One of those requests came from Williams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The convention center expansion initiative will not make the November ballot even though San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer gave it his best shot.Faulconer's ballot measure proposal to fund the convention center expansion, get homeless people off the streets and fix roads needed five votes to pass.  It only got 4.The vote came after Faulconer asked council to convene a special meeting with just 24 hours' notice.  The mayor requested it after learning there weren't enough valid signatures collected to place the measure on the November ballot. 602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The famed Jessop's Clock that has rested in Horton Plaza since the center opened has been removed.Tuesday, the clock was moved into temporary storage, though the location is not being revealed, according to Jim Jessop, former owner of Jessop's Jewelry, a plaza mainstay for 125 years before closing in 2017.Upon announcing the closing of Jessop's Jewelry, the plaza asked Jessop to move the clock.RELATED: Grocery chain suing Horton Plaza over millions in sales lossesIt's likely the clock, constructed in 1907, will remain in temporary storage for a couple of years until its new location's lease is signed, Jessop says.The fact that its current location is being kept secret may be due to security concerns.
