CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June. This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. "With many little strokes, a large tree is felled. What does that mean?""He knows every one of his kids." said Aviara Principal Rose Flowers. She says Heath's approach resonates so well with students, discussions often continue outside the classroom. And as students relate to their study subjects, their bond also grows with their teacher."We as adults, when we make those strong connections, which Coach Heath does, it reconnects these kids to that familiar figure that an adult can be trusted," said Flowers. "You can connect with them and work hard for them. And those kids will work hard for him."For June, we honor Joseph Heath as a Classroom Hero. SDCCU is proudly honoring local teachers through SDCCU Classroom Heroes, launched in partnership with iHeartMedia, Inc. San Diego. Teachers, students, parents and the community are encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher by visiting sdccu.com/classroomheroes . 2338

CHICAGO — A statue of Christopher Columbus in downtown Chicago's Grant Park was taken down early Friday, a week after protesters trying to topple the monument to the Italian explorer clashed with police.Crews covered the statue, secured it with straps and used a large crane to remove the statue from its pedestal as a small crowd gathered to watch.Several work trucks were seen in the area, but it was unclear where the statue would be taken. The Associated Press sent an email Friday seeking comment from Mayor Lori Lightfoot's office.Last Friday, 18 police officers were injured when protesters tried to topple the statue. According to CNN, protesters used fireworks, frozen bottles and rocks as projectiles. Twelve people were arrested. The staute's removal also comes amid a plan by President Donald Trump to dispatch federal law enforcement agents to the city to respond to gun violence, prompting worries that the surge will inhibit residents' ability to hold demonstrations.Protesters have targeted statues of Christopher Columbus across the country because of the explorers' controversial history of killing Native people upon his arrival in the Americas. Several cities have chosen to remove Columbus statues amid monthslong protests against police brutality and systemic racism. 1295

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Members of the North San Diego County Genealogical Society have found a way to help Camp Fire victims recover some of what they lost in December's devastating fire. They're donating dozens of boxes of books on history and genealogy to the Paradise Genealogy Society."When we heard about the fire, we thought, wow, we have a lot of books that we don’t know what to do with," says NSDCGS President Julianne Adamik. "As you can see, they’re taking up a lot of room in my garage!"The Paradise Genealogy Society lost their entire library in the fire. Before and after pictures show the building burned to the ground. It housed nearly 2,800 books and another 500 periodicals and articles about genealogy, the study of ancestry. While some of it, like local records, is irreplaceable, the members of the NSDCGS say the books they can give will help the people in Paradise start to rebuild."You need a distraction. You need to get back to your old ways in life," says NSDCGS Vice President Tom Cousineau. "These people were working on their Genealogy fairly regularly and they need to get back to their normal way of life."Many of the books are duplicates of books the NSDCSS already has in their library in Carlsbad. Adamik says they get donations all the time from people looking to clear some space or from estates of genealogy fans who have passed away.Volunteers have also searched sites like eBay to see if any of the books are worth selling. Adamik says the society in Paradise could do that as a fundraiser. The only catch in the plan is figuring out a way to get more than 40 boxes of books from Carlsbad to Paradise. Adamik says they're looking into creating a palate that can be shipped or finding someone willing to drive them up in a truck.A representative from the Paradise Genealogy Society says the donations will be beneficial and they appreciate all the support the NSDCGS has given them over the past few months. 1955
