BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday.     The Xinzhou-600, developed by Xi'an Aircraft Industry Company (XAC) of the China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I), flew on Thursday in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, said the AVIC I.     The turboprop aircraft was a new version of the Xinzhou-60 that can carry 50 to 60 passengers. The Xinzhou-600 had been updated with a more comfortable cabin and better designed body structure and maintenance system, said Geng Ruguang from the AVIC. A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday    It was also designed for inter-island flights, which would helpit in the Southeast Asia and island nation markets, Geng said.     XAC took about three years to develop the Xinzhou-600, which would be delivered to clients from the second half of 2009, he said.     The company has orders for 136 Xinzhou-60s and has exported them to Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Laos, Zimbabwe and Bolivia since 2006.     This would give China the edge to compete in the global market for turboprop aircraft, where demand is expected to reach 1,900 in20 years.     Geng said the company had started to plan the development of the next generation aircraft, the Xinzhou-700.

The catastrophe in northern Hebei Province claimed about240,000 lives three decades ago.     He hailed the efficiency and order the country has maintained for the past 80 hours as the country focused its resources on saving lives and disaster relief work for quake victims.     He said the government will stick to its "people-first" policy in its future rescue operations and reconstruction works. He also visited Daqing, China's largest oil production base and Harbin, the provincial capital.     Local governments should build more public cultural facilities, he said.     He urged the province to deepen its cultural restructuring, support multi-talented professionals and develop cultural products with brand names that were recognized at home and abroad.     In Daqing, Li also visited the memorial to Iron Man Wang Jinxi, an oil worker who devoted his life to the development of the petroleum industry.     Daqing, a city built on the vast oil field, is known for the "Daqing Red Flag", a model set for all industries in the country by late leader Mao Zedong.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday visited an exhibition which pays tribute to victims of the May earthquake in Sichuan Province and the nation's concerted efforts to assist the disaster-stricken areas.     Photos and videos showing the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, as well as items that were used to rescue victims drew attentions of the leaders.     They were also briefed on how the people from all walks of life had made donations and contributions to help the earthquake-stricken areas recover from the country's worst disaster in the past 30 years. The quake, which has left more than 80,000 dead or missing, was the deadliest and strongest tremor to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.

  

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Prevention of secondary disasters, such as landslides and mud-rock flows, amid rain storms and frequent aftershocks following the May 12 earthquake was an "urgent task", said the quake relief headquarters of China's State Council on Monday.     "New geological disasters can happen at any time due to the long-lasting aftershocks and much stronger precipitation as the country's rivers enter the flooding season," the headquarters warned after a meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The quake zone and the rain-lashed southern regions are the focuses of the prevention work, according to the meeting.     Work must be sped up to remove the dangers of quake-formed lakes, quake-damaged dams and hydropower plants as well as dikes of major rivers, the headquarters said.     The headquarters urged local governments and related departments to strengthen monitoring and alarms of rains, floods and aftershocks, and told quake-hit regions to base their recovery plans on geological hazard assessment.
