BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi clarified China's stance on Internet management and emphasized Internet is open and active in China when meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry said Friday.Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a question on whether Yang and Clinton discussed the Google case during their meeting on the sidelines of an international conference on Afghanistan in London."Yang stressed that Internet in China is open and active," said Ma.Chinese people enjoyed adequate freedom of speech in line with the law and have access to various kinds of information, which is an important reason why Chinese people unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Ma said."Yang said promoting the development of the Internet is our consistent policy," said Ma.Ma added that China has its own domestic situation and cultural tradition, and it accords with the world's common practice that China regulates the Internet according to its laws and policies."China advocates severely fighting against hacking through beefing up international cooperation, so as to protect Internet safety and citizens' privacy in accordance with the law," Ma said.According to the Internet Society of China, the number of cyber attacks from abroad saw a year-on-year increase of 148 percent in 2008.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Minister of Culture Zhao Shaohua and Australian Ambassador to China Geoff Raby Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on reciprocal years of culture (2010-2012) between China and Australia.The Year of Australian Culture in China, the opening ceremony of which is scheduled for June 8 in the National Center for the Performing Arts, lasts from June 2010 to June 2011.It will be a showcase of cooperation between China and Australia in the fields of art, music, performance, literature, film and other media.It will include an Australian aboriginal art exhibition held in the National Art Museum of China and art performances jointly produced by Chinese and Australian artists.As the first step, the National Museum of Australia and the National Art Museum of China Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to put arrangements in place for reciprocal touring exhibitions in China and Australia from 2010 to 2012 and facilitate future cultural exchanges.According to a joint statement released during the visit of China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang to Australia last year, the Year of Australian Culture in China is scheduled from 2010 to 2011, and the Year of Chinese Culture in Australia from 2011 to 2012.China's Ministry of Culture is actively preparing for the Year of Chinese Culture in Australia.

  

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday urged for pushing forward mainland-Taiwan relations steadily, saying the two sides are facing a grand opportunity for the development of ties.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the call when attending a panel discussion of the annual session of the National People's Congress."The relations across the Taiwan Strait saw comprehensive improvement and development over the past year, and we are now facing a grand opportunity to develop the ties," Jia told NPC deputies of the delegation representing Taiwan."It's imperative to do well the work concerning Taiwan in a concrete and effective manner and steadily push forward cross-Strait relations," Jia said."We must stick to the principle that the mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China, consolidate the political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and strengthen political trust between the two sides," Jia said.Jia, also Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, also urged the two sides to deepen their economic cooperation and establish a long-term mechanism for mutual development and benefit.Cultural and educational exchanges should be vigorously promoted to deepen the sense of national and cultural identity between compatriots across the strait, Jia said.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday called for religious believers' role in promoting the country's economic development and social stability.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when meeting with heads of national religious groups.He urged religious groups in the country to pool the wisdom and strength of believers to explore ways of helping promote economic and social development.He also asked them to help consolidate harmonious religious relations and help religious people build up national consciousness, civic consciousness and legal consciousness to ensure social harmony and stability.During the meeting, Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,bid greetings to religious believers for the upcoming Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.He said 2009 was an important year for the country's religious work as the Party's basic policies on religious work were well implemented and people's religious freedom was fully ensured.He said 2010 was a key year to cope with the financial crisis and it was also of great significance for the country's harmony and stability in the religious circle.
