SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday.The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. He says they will start within their members first, then the community."We'll reach out to the community and hope that some of them will value this place that's been in the community for 90 years and let it still be a home for veterans to be around other veterans," he said.VFW 5985 has been closed most days except Tuesdays and Fridays to make meals for dozens of veterans, their families, and those who need it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many of the 134 cats rescued from a Lakeside apartment are up for adoption in County animal shelters. Sheriff’s deputies who were conducting a welfare check at the apartment Thursday discovered the cats and called animal services.Most of the animals appear to be healthy and well-fed, though stand-offish at the moment.  RELATED: 'Dozens' of cats found inside Lakeside apartment during elderly neglect callThe adoptable animals are at the shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad.  All have been checked out by the veterinary staff and given flea and worm medicines.  Each will be spayed or neutered and chipped before adoption.  The adoption fee is per cat or kitten. 745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just days before masses of people are expected to descend on Del Mar for the San Diego County Fair, a busy road has reopened following a bluff collapse. City crews completed a retaining wall and reopened Jimmy Durante Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The road wasn't originally expected to reopen until June 4, several days after the fair opens on May 31. The cost of cleanup and stabilizing the cliff is expected to cost million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261
