(KGTV) - A North County gun store, Poway Weapons and Gear Range, is part of a group suing the state of California over a law which took effect earlier this year.The law makes it illegal to sell rifles and shotguns to anyone younger than 21. There are exceptions for military, law enforcement, and people with hunting licenses. It was already illegal for those under 21 to buy handguns.Store Director of Sales Danielle Rudolph tells 10News the lawsuit is about sticking up for their customers."The constitution protects anybody that’s an adult in the United States. An adult is 18,” she says.The state legislator who wrote the law says he was inspired to act by the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which a man is accused of killing 17 students and staff members at a school while using an assault rifle. A similar weapon was used by the gunman in the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, which killed one person and injured three others.Supporters of the law say it's a common sense regulation to help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.Rudolph says California already has the strictest gun laws in the country and that more aren't needed. She also says the law prevents her store from offering the gun safety and training programs for teens and children that are an important factor in creating a culture of responsible gun ownerships. Emily Powell is a third-generation owner of the iconic independent bookstore.“I think the reason we’re so big and so noteworthy 50 years into our history is really the mix of new and used inventory on the shelf together," Powell said. "Very few folks do that in any industry. Certainly, it was unusual in the book industry at the time, and it’s still somewhat unusual still to this day.”Book lovers travel from all over to explore the so-called "City of Books," thrifting for old books with new ideas.“This is one of my favorite books,” Powell said.It could be a rare book, a timely book, or a book you’ve never heard of before.“It really resonates whether you’re a book lover or just someone with an interest in anything. You just have to find your corner of the store and dive deep into that section.”Powell’s is the world’s largest independent bookstore. The owners recently decided to pull their books from Amazon’s virtual shelves. Some say the world’s largest online marketplace has become a threat to local bookstore culture.“They extract a commission but they also ask for certain customer-service treatment and ways of behaving that are not how we would ordinarily run our business,” Powell said.Powell says business with Amazon became more and more costly, and with the pandemic, she says they needed to find a way forward that is sustainable for Powell’s and the community.“We need to be a part of an ecosystem that’s healthy and vital, and so we have to be part of building that ecosystem and hence the choice to cut off our Amazon business,” Powell said.Powell’s isn’t the only independent retailer struggling to compete with a company offering anything and everything at a cheap price with quick and free shipping. Powell’s has been turning to its e-commerce site during the pandemic as online sales have become essential, but not every local bookstore can afford to have its own book-sale website.“Bookshop is an online bookstore that supports local mom-and-pop, brick-and-mortar independent bookstores,” Bookshop founder Andy Hunter said.Andy Hunter started Bookshop in January. It’s a free way for bookstores to create an online shop to sell to its customers.“They can just go to our website, scroll down to the footer, there will be a ‘become an affiliate’ link and then they can onboard and they can create a shop in under an hour," Hunter said. "Really maybe half an hour. It’s as easy as setting up a Facebook page.”We reached out to Amazon for comment on this book-selling trend, but have yet to hear back. Hunter says Bookshop has already captured nearly 2% of Amazon’s market share for books. He’s hoping that percentage will continue to rise.“If we lose independent bookstores, the importance of books in our culture will be diminished,” Hunter said.Powell says spending money at a local bookstore instead of Amazon keeps the dollars in the community. She says choosing to stop sales through Amazon was a difficult decision, but a necessary one."We’ve contemplated it for years because we know that staying with Amazon was not the best choice for our business, but it’s very hard to give up sales that you really need to keep surviving one way or another,” Powell said.Her hope for Powell’s Books is that they can connect people to the value of reading while continuing to evolve with the changes of the future.“We’re so accustomed in our modern age to the idea that the computer is the best way to find anything, but in fact, it’s very difficult to replicate the in-person experience of a bookstore,” Powell said.She says certain books will always stay relevant. 3820

(KGTV) — The former Stoneridge Country Club in Poway is finally about to get cleaned up.It appears voters have approved new housing on the land, which has turned into a beat-up, overgrown mess.But that's not what Kevin McNamara, managing partner of The Farm in Poway, sees."I think the plan is beautiful. It's going to be a great place to live. It will be a great addition to North Poway," McNamara said.McNamara is celebrating the apparent passage of Measure P, which approves changing the zoning on the old golf course to allow for more housing.The current owner of the land, Michael Schlesinger of Beverly Hills, also wanted to build homes at Stoneridge. But voters defeated his plan in 2017. The next day, Schlesinger shut down the long-running club.McNamara thought he could come up with a better plan, and he thought he knew how to get Poway voters on board. He negotiated an option with Schlesinger to buy the land if voters said yes.He put the whole plan together before getting the concept on the ballot."They thought I was nuts because it's a million dollars. This was a big bet," McNamara said.He called his gamble The Farm in Poway. He first showed ABC 10News the plan in 2018: 160 homes, along with features like community gardens, trails, a club, and a butterfly farm.McNamara spent nearly two years meeting with every Poway resident he could to convince them it was the right use of the land."I thought it would be real close. I was confident, but I thought it would be close. I had no idea it would be a total blowout," said McNamara.Now, he says, it's time to go to work. And the first step is keeping a promise he made to the neighbors."Next Thursday, we start the cleanup. We're going to mow it, the whole place. We're going to clean out all the dead shrubs, the broken trees. We're going to do a real thorough cleanup," McNamara said.He expects to officially take over the property next spring and have the first homes ready for families to move in by the end of 2022. 2010

POWAY (CNS) - The man killed in a chain-reaction crash that injured several other people and blocked rush-hour traffic was identified today by authorities and friends as a 40-year-old father and musician.Aluctec Galindo was driving a Kia Optima just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a northbound lane of Community Road when he lost control of the vehicle and struck another northbound motorist a little south of Poway Road, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said.
