SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's housing crunch could soon offer a very small but mighty option for renters. They would come in the form of what are called tiny homes — which can be up to 400 square feet. The homes are easier to manufacture and transport than so-called granny flats because they are built in a factory, as opposed to on-site. The homes can be as affordable as ,000 but as much as 0,000, depending on size and amenities.RELATED: San Diego's first tiny house village invites people to live with lessDozens will be on display at this weekend's Tinyfest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.David Martinez once lived in a tiny home to save money. He now sells them for an El Cajon company called homes to go. On Friday, he was showing an 84-square-foot home, which had a bed, tiny stove, mini-fridge, storage space, a wall-mounted HD TV, and a full bathroom.RELATED: For rent: San Diego backyard shed listed for ,050 per month"You'd be surprised, you get used to it," Martinez said. "You find out there's rooms you don't need, and this gives you essentials." 1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s Planning Commission met Thursday to discuss potential new rules that would help regulate the short-term rental industry in the city.A plan proposed by City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell was first introduced in July after a compromise was reached among members of the hospitality industry and short-term rental companies. The plan would implement tighter restrictions such as capping the number of short-term rental permits that are granted. There are also plans to require a two-night minimum stay to avoid one-night stays that are often connected to big parties that concerns residents.A representative for Campbell says implementing tighter regulations will help law enforcement address any problems that may arise. The proposed plan creates penalties and fines for those who violate the city’s “good neighbor” policy.More than 500 people signed up to voice their opinion about this proposal during Thursday’s virtual meeting. One caller said, “We depend on this for our livelihood, especially since the pandemic has taken a toll on us already. Without having the ability to host, many of us will be forced to leave our homes.”Another caller added, “This has been an issue for years. It’s now time to act and bring it to a close.”The next step will be to send the proposal to the full City Council for review. 1350

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday's winning Powerball numbers are: 08, 12, 13, 19, 27 and the Powerball is 4.Saturday's Powerball drawing will be for an estimated 0 million, with a cash option of 8.6 million. While the Mega Millions craze has come and gone, Saturday's jackpot would still be the fourth largest in the history.Much like the Mega Millions prize, the Powerball jackpot has climbed since Aug. 11, after a winning ticket in Staten Island, New York, raked in 5.6 million. Since then, there have been 21 drawings without a jackpot winner.RELATED: No winner in Wednesday's Powerball drawing, jackpot increases to 0 millionThe odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. Each ticket is .If you don't win the big prize, there's still a chance to win something. Matching the Powerball is worth at least and matching every number but the red Powerball is worth at least million. And maybe you will strike it rich. In San Diego, one ticket matched five of six numbers during this week's record-setting Mega Millions drawing, worth 2,472.Or if you have about 90 friends, pool together some cash and buy up a boatload of tickets, like these friends in Florida — though, it's safe to assume they lost more than they raked in. 1289

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, San Diego's crown jewel, Balboa Park, turns 150 years old.San Diego will celebrate the founding of the iconic park on May 26 during the second annual Fiesta Botanica. The historic day will be marked with a parade, kids activities, park tours, butterfly and ladybug releases, and much more.Live performances are also planned at the park's Botanical Garden and Spreckels Organ Pavilion. In 1868, the City of San Diego moved to set aside 1,400 acres of land for the area then known as "City Park." For more than 20 years, the land sat undeveloped but with its spectacular view of downtown San Diego.RELATED: 'Dr. Beach' names Coronado Beach among best in the U.S.Soon, the park would see the first steps that have led to its scenic beauty. In 1892, Kate Sessions, the "Mother of Balboa Park," offered to plant 100 trees a year within the park in exchange for 32 acres of the land to be used for a commercial nursery. As the park came into its own, water systems, roads, and more plants were added. In the decades since it was established, Balboa Park has seen the San Diego Natural History Museum, Museum of Man, Spreckels Organ Pavilion, and many other attractions added, transforming the parcel of land into an art and culture destination. 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego residents have more access to public parks than other major California cities but parts of the county are falling behind, according to a study by the Equinox Project.78 percent of San Diegans live within a half-mile of a park in city limits, the study showed in an analysis of 2016 data. Overall, the city had almost 35 acres of park land per 1,000 residents.Mayor Faulconer credits proper budgeting as a reason for having so many parks in the city."Our neighborhood parks need to reflect that. That's why it's been important to me to back that up and put the dollars where they're supposed to be going and we're seeing a huge difference," said Faulconer.COUNTY CITIES TRAIL SAN DIEGOThe park land percentages dropped in San Diego County cities with higher low-income populations: Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Vista, and El Cajon.Moms like Nichollette Burrows and Kiara Edwards in Lemon Grove say they usually drive out of their city to look for different options for their children."It definitely makes my husband and I want to move to somewhere that's more kids friendly and already has those amenities," said Burrows. "Almost every time they ask if we can walk to the park, but it's just too far," said Edwards.  1255
