DETROIT — Family Video is one of the last surviving video stores in the country. And they're trying a new tactic to bring people into the store: selling CBD products. “It’s been crazy,” said Erin Gardner, the store manager of the Family Video in Waterford Township, Michigan.Gardner says the owner of Family Video, Keith Hoogland, tried CBD balm to help with his tennis elbow. It worked so well for him, he wanted to share the benefits of CBD products with Family Video customers. Right now, there are around 76 stores in Michigan selling CBD products, and it’s expected to launch at all 100 stores in Michigan by the end of this week.CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive ingredient of cannabis plants and can be extracted from the two strains of cannabis, both hemp and marijuana. CBD oil has been found in lotions, creams and food. And although the only CBD products officially approved by the US Food and Drug Administration is a prescription oil called Epidiolex, proponents say it can have many health benefits for humans and pets.Family Video’s products are THC-free.“Some other CBD products have traces of THC in it, and then you’ll fail drug tests. Conditions aren’t ideal for tactical training, but trainee Teresa Fast is pushing through. "There's definitely winds, or rains, or whatever is out there,” she says. “We just work through it. It definitely makes you tough."Fast is among the hundreds of people each year who graduate and become U.S. border patrol agents. But before that happens, agents must first pass the coursework at CBP Border Patrol Academy, located in the desert of southern New Mexico, where they're whipped into shape.The agents are trained on real-work scenarios, like safely ending a vehicle pursuit. These types of situations were the focus of the academy's overhaul about a year ago, when the school switched over from a classroom 3-month curriculum to a more hands-on regimen that lasts 6 months. "The students actually see some of the things they will encounter in the field, so getting out of the classroom and making it scenario-based,” explains Deputy Chief Carlos Ortiz with the academy. Other scenarios include vehicle stops and interrogations, which are usually practiced in Spanish, a language they all have to learn. "You have to be a strong and willing person to be able to be out there day in day out,” Ortiz says. And 47-year-old Richard Douglas is willing and up for the task. Douglas was a border agent two decades ago, before moving over to Homeland Security after 9/11. He says now is a good time to return to the border. "The border patrol has made a big push to increase their numbers, and it was a really good time to come back for me,” Douglas says. Earlier this month, the US Air Force ended height restrictions for pilots in hopes of attracting a more diverse pool of candidates, which the Air Force hopes will result in more female applicants. The new rules went into effect on May 13 for applicants.Previously, pilots were required to stand 64 to 77 inches tall. The Air Force said that medical and operations communities will apply an anthropometric screening process to individual applicants for placement in an aircraft they can safely fly as they pursue a rated track. The Air Force says that its previous requirement eliminated about 44% of female applicants age 20 to 29. “Historically, most of our aircraft were engineered around the height of an average male, not females,” said Lt. Col. Jessica Ruttenber, Air Force mobility planner and programmer and team leader on the Women’s Initiative Team.Government data says that the average American adult woman stands 63.8 inches tall, while the average man in the US stands 69.3 inches. The Air Force had a waiver process that allowed applicants who didn’t meet height requirements the opportunity to be considered, but the Air Force said that the process could have scared off applicants. “While most height waivers were approved under the old system, feedback indicated the entire waiver process served as a barrier, which negatively impacted female rated accessions,” said Lt.
