SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another testing site is being added to San Diego County, and this one will be the closest to the U.S.-Mexico border so far for the region.The San Ysidro port of Entry’s PedWest crossing is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian international border crossings. Within the next two weeks, a testing site at that location will join the more than two dozen others across San Diego County. It will be an appointment-free, walk-up site. Officials expect 200 tests to be done daily there.Chicano Federation Chief Strategy Officer Roberto Alcantar said this is a step in the right direction as far as testing is concerned, but said there is still work to be done to help the Latino community.Related: San Diego County launches COVID-19 outreach campaign for LatinosHe said many in the Latino community are afraid of getting tests done because of the fear of a positive test.“Our community is nervous about losing their jobs, not being able to go to work, the real economic impact that comes from being positive and feeling that that might hinder them in a way,” he said.He added that this is a big-picture problem. The Latino community lacks affordable housing, forcing families to live in close quarters and increasing the risk of spreading the virus, and also forcing people to live across the border to find affordable housing. Many of these people are essential workers and need to continue to work to support their families, so they cross the border on a daily basis. This new site will help give them access to testing.“They’re having to cross the border every day. We’re hearing from workers that they’re spending 4-5 hours every day waiting just to cross,” said Alcantar.Alcantar also said that the new testing site will likely lead to more positive rates, as is expected with increased testing, and he worries about what that will do to the perception of the Latino community, which already has higher numbers than the rest. As of August 9, 62% of San Diego’s cases are Hispanic people, a community that makes up just 34% of the population. That number will likely continue to climb with another testing site in an area dominated by Spanish speakers. This, tied with a perception that people are carrying the virus from Mexico to the U.S., could be bad.“Our concern is that this will help push further that narrative that we have to have a testing site because the rates are coming from Mexico,” he said.The Chicano Federation has been working with UCSD to reach out to the Latino community and find out why they don’t want to get tested and also encourage them to get tested. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As San Diegans come to grips with the violence that unfolded in a Paradise Hills home, leaving a mother and her young boys dead, District Attorney Summer Stephan tells 10News it is a problem that San Diego is becoming too familiar with.“Domestic violence remains the number one killer of women in the United States and right here in San Diego,” said Stephan.She revealed the County of San Diego had 18 murders last year related to domestic violence.RELATED: Resources available to domestic violence victimsStephan said a third of those murders involved people who had active restraining orders.“We want victims to know that a restraining order is a piece of paper and that it alone is not going to protect the victim,” she said.According to Stephan, the first 72 hours after filing a restraining order are the most vulnerable for retaliation and victims need to have a plan in place.RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“In the first 72 hours after somebody obtains a restraining order the risk is heightened,” she said. “There is almost an escalation of risk.”One important piece of advice for victims after filing a restraining order, is to leave the home the offender knows of.“What we say is for a victim to get a restraining order, but only after there has been a safety plan and there has been a threat assessment by professionals.”Across the county, there are a number of resources available to help put a plan together.“There's a family justice center run by the City Attorney Mara Elliott, there's a center for community solutions with a 24 hour number,” she said.More resources are also listed on the DA’s website https://www.sdcda.org/helping/domestic-violence.html 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Applications are now being accepted for the CONNECT ALL @ the Jacobs Center Business Accelerator Program (CAJC).CAJC is the region's first low-to-moderate income and diversity-focused business accelerator program.The first CAJC group of 13 local startups included businesses in retail, technology, food, and health and beauty. The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000.
