The Dallas Police Department said on Tuesday evening that two of its officers and a civilian loss prevention officer were shot at a Dallas Home Depot. The Dallas Police confirmed earlier in the evening that the two officer were in critical condition. Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said late Tuesday evening that all three victims are out of surgery in a Dallas hospital. "We're asking for your continued prayers for them and their families," Hall said. The shooting reportedly took place around 4:11 p.m. local time.  In a press conference, police identified Armando Juarez, 29, as a person of interest. He is believed to have left the incident driving a white pickup truck. Around 9 p.m. local time, Juarez was arrested after a car pursuit involving Dallas Police and a white pickup truck.Hall said that Juarez will be charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. A female passenger in Juarez's truck was also detained after the chase, Hall said. In 2016, Dallas experienced one of the deadliest ambushes on law enforcement in recent US history, as five officers were shot and killed while patrolling a Black Lives Matter protest.  1285

The city is opening a code enforcement investigation into an apartment complex that is made up almost entirely of short-term vacation rentals.The complex, called The Louisiana, is on University Avenue in North Park. A company called Sonder has leased each of its 13 market-rate apartments to rent to visitors (the complex has two affordable units as well). A one-bedroom apartment is listed at 0 per night for a weekend in October. The city made the call after a group called Save San Diego Neighborhoods held a press conference outside the complex Thursday.Board member Brian Curry said this type of business is contributing to the city's supply crunch that pushes up rents. He also questioned whether the complex, permitted as mixed-use apartments, is allowed to be operated more like a hotel. "It is simply wrong to steal housing from our residents to meet the visitor room night demand," said Curry. In a statement before the city announced its investigation, Sonder defended its arrangement with the developer. "Sonder San Diego strictly complies with all local laws and pays all local taxes, period. Contrary to recent false claims, our location on University Avenue is fully licensed, legal and not zoned ‘residential' but for commercial and mixed-use with visitor accommodation allowed by right," the statement said. "We look forward to continuing to grow and give back in San Diego while working with the City on real solutions for affordable housing.”Additionally, the buildings developer said the extra funds from the lease with Sonder is helping to fund other housing construction faster. The coronavirus vaccine has been administered to 1 million Americans in the last 10 days, the CDC reported on Wednesday.The first vaccinations were administered to Americans early last week after Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine received an emergency use authorization. Pfizer said last week that it had distributed 2.9 million doses of the vaccine throughout the United States.Earlier this week, Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine candidate began being administered to Americans.So far, there have been over 9.4 million doses of the vaccine distributed throughout the US. Getting them administered is taking some time.Although 1 million vaccinations is a significant milestone, it is a fraction of the vaccinations needed to stop the spread of the virus. The first round of vaccinations are intended for 24 million Americans who work in health care settings or who live or work assisted living facilities. The next step will be to vaccinate 21 million Americans over the age of 75 and 30 million front-line workers, such as teachers, first responders and grocery store employees.“While we celebrate this historic milestone, we also acknowledge the challenging path ahead,” CDC director Robert Redfield said in a statement. “There is currently a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S., but supply will increase in the weeks and months to come. The CDC announced Friday a pilot project intended on decreasing chronic diseases in high-risk communities. The government is putting million toward the project to address five areas of social detriments.Some groups—including racial and ethnic minorities, those living in poverty, and people in certain parts of the country—are disproportionately impacted by the burden of chronic conditions, the CDC said.“Chronic diseases touch every American, in one way or another,” said Karen Hacker, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s NCCDPHP. “This important pilot project will help us better understand strategies to advance health equity and reduce the immense burden of chronic disease.”The program will address five areas on concern, said the CDC:Built environment: human-made surroundings that influence overall community health and individual behaviors that drive healthCommunity-clinical linkages: connections made among health care systems and services, public health agencies, and community-based organizations to improve population healthFood insecurity: an economic and social condition characterized by limited or uncertain access to adequate and nutritious foodSocial connectedness: the degree to which individuals or groups of individuals have and perceive a desired number, quality, and diversity of relationships that create a sense of belonging and being cared for, valued, and supportedTobacco-free policy: population-based preventive measures to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.The CDC said it will work with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and the National Association of County and City Health Officials to identify community to join the pilot program. 1727
