SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Five years since it was last open to the public, the iconic "Plunge" swimming pool is finally set to welcome San Diegans at Belmont Park."Oh, we're so excited. It's highly anticipated," said Belmont Park spokesperson Michelle McKee.The pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014. Work finally began in earnest in 2017, tearing out much of the Plunge infrastructure, while trying to maintain a link to its historic nature."It was a wonderful pool," McKee said. "We wanted to maintain the structure of some of those elements, so that remains here in the pool."A signature element, a large mural by the renowned artist Wyland, had to be removed. In its place is a new, bright, open look. Windows surround the pool, giving swimmers a view of the ocean. A retractable roof will help control the climate inside the glass space.The high-end gym company "Fit" is building a club on the upper floors. Fit will manage the pool. Members will have access to the pool. The public can purchase day passes. With a dynamic pricing plan, adult passes will begin at .Some San Diegans who have been to the plunge in the past worry that the price point will drive out locals and turn the Plunge into a tourist haven."I feel like when it's not tourist seaon, like summer when there's not many tourists, it's just going to be there. SAN DIEGO - A hot air balloon with 14 passengers and a pilot on board made an unplanned landing in Rancho Pe?asquitos Sunday night.The balloon set down on a hillside at Pe?asquitos Drive and Del Diablo Way west of Interstate 15 about 7:15 p.m.The community jumped in to help, keeping the basket stable and helping the passengers exit safely, according to the San Diego Police Department.Witnesses helped the pilot bring the basket down to the street where it could be picked up by the owner, police said. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- A debate is unfolding across the country, and right here in San Diego over how and when to reopen schools during this pandemic.With the new school year is quickly approaching, and the number of coronavirus cases continuing to surge locally, many teachers are left with concerns about opening their classrooms.The California Teachers Association (CTA), one of the largest teachers unions, urging state lawmakers to hold off reopening schools until it is proven to be safe enough."It is not reasonable for us to think that it’s safe for us to go back to schools," said E. Toby Boyd, the president of CTA who heard from teachers across the state. "We have to look at what is being mentioned in terms of the science, the facts, and how the disease is being spread."People are very afraid, very concerned because they either have underlying health conditions or someone in their household does," said Kisha Borden, the president of the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). "I'm hearing from educators of all ages who are very concerned about being put into an enclosed space, their classroom, with 25 to 30 children without the proper protocols in place."The San Diego Unified School District will start the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 31 with an option of in-person or online distance learning.But, Borden said before teachers return, they have some demands."We're asking for at least a decline in cases over 14 days so that we're not bringing back large groups of people during a time when we're seeing an increase in cases," she said.The union would also like to see widespread, accessible, and frequent COVID-19 testing of students, staff, and parents when necessary, and fully-funded doctor recommended prevention measures.The district has listened to the union's concerns, and Borden said, after the latest meeting, she's feeling hopeful."I'm encouraged, the last statement that came from the district said that they'd like to meet with health professionals, they'd like to meet with public safety experts and really come up with clear medically proven guidelines and timelines around what is going to be necessary to bring students and staff back into our classrooms," she said.SDEA sent ABC 10News the following statement 2261

(KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said.She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets.The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo.
