CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province.Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province.The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province.However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, or the Central Party School, opened its door to more than 60 correspondents from domestic and overseas media on Wednesday, one day ahead of the 89th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, on July 1.It was the first time the country's highest institution for the training of high- and middle-level Party officials invited a large group of media workers from home and abroad to tour the mystery-shrouded campus in northwestern Beijing.Forty-two correspondents, photo journalists and TV reporters from major overseas media organizations - including the Associated Press, the Agence France-Presse, the Guardian, CNN and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation - participated.During the two-hour tour Wednesday afternoon, the group attended a press conference, a class and interviewed some teachers and students during their visit to the school's main teaching building, gymnasium, canteen and dormitory building."The Central Party School and the whole Party system haven't interacted much with the outside world -- this is something we are trying to change," said Li Baosheng, the school's vice president.The Party, founded July 1, 1921, is the world's largest political party. PARIS, July 9 (Xinhua) -- China Changan Auto Group Corporation (CCAG) and French leading carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen signed a contract Friday here on the creation of an equally owned joint venture in China.The contract was signed by Xu Bin, president of China South Industries Group Corporation, Changan's main shareholder, and Philippe Varin, chairman of the French part's Managing Board, at a ceremony attended by Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Bernard Accoyer, president of the National Assembly of France.Their initial cooperation will focus on introducing the Citroen DS line in China and launching a dedicated new brand for the venture, the two companies said in a joint statement.The contract also allows for the joint venture to market, at a later date, further vehicles under the partners' other brands, Peugeot and Changan, they said.Based in Shenzhen, southeast of China, the joint venture will have initial annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles and engines, which will meet the highest environmental standards. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- A solution that satisfies all parties' concerns through dialogue and negotiation is the right course for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang early Thursday morning.Qin made the remarks when commenting on a new UN resolution on the Iranian nuclear issue, which prohibits Iran from investing abroad in nuclear and enrichment operations and imposes binding new restrictions on Iran's import of conventional arms.The resolution was the fourth set of UN sanctions against Iran since December 2006, with 12 votes in favor. Brazil and Turkey, two non-permanent members of the Security Council, voted against the draft resolution while Lebanon, another non-permanent member, abstained."China always holds it is the right way to address the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue, negotiation and other diplomatic means to seek a solution that satisfies the concerns of all parties", said Qin.China's consideration in addressing the issue is to maintain the validity of the international nuclear non-proliferation mechanism and safeguard peace and stability in the Middle East, Qin said, adding China supports the dual-track strategy for resolving the issue.
