SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New numbers show almost 40% of people who test positive for COVID-19 in San Diego County are between the ages of 20 and 39.As more businesses begin to open up, more Californians are testing positive for the coronavirus."It really is an alarming trend," Dr. Abisola Olulade, family medicine doctor at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said.It is a trend affecting everyone, but most noticeably for younger adults between 20 and 39.RELATED: Gov. But new numbers show the virus does not discriminate."There is a sense that a lot of young people are, well, you're young, and so you feel a little bit more invincible. "We are not immune to the effects of this virus."Younger folks are often the first to venture out to newly reopened businesses or have participated in recent large gatherings like the protests. This is in comparison to older folks, who often continue to stay indoors.The problem is this. Young people who feel no symptoms likely will not be hospitalized. WASH your hands. And WATCH your distance," Dr. Olulade said. "We all have a social and moral obligation to protect the health of others, so I hope that everyone takes that on as a personal responsibility."Dr. Olulade also adds that there is an increasing number of cases of young people who never knew they had underlying conditions until they got tested for COVID-19, and now they're fighting for their lives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Friday, San Diego Police responded to an urgent request to reform the department's de-escalation policy.A board appointed by the mayor has now voted on a request to add more explicit language to the policy on tactics and techniques for how officers are allowed to de-escalate in the field.“The time is now and we really need this for the City of San Diego,” said Attorney Maresa Talbert, Co-Chair for San Diegans for Justice and a member of the Coalition for Police Accountability and Transparency. 10News spoke to her on Friday after Thursday night's emergency virtual meeting of the Community Review Board on Police Practices.“We really need holistic policies in place that will both keep not only our residents safe but also law enforcement safe,” she added.Below is a statement from Sharmaine Moseley, Executive Director of the Community Review Board on Police Practices:"The Community Review Board on Police Practices (CRB) held a special meeting to discuss a recommendation they previously made for SDPD to adopt a de-escalation policy that models Baltimore PD’s de-escalation policy. At that meeting, the CRB discussed and unanimously agreed to add more explicit language to a policy that would require officers to use de-escalation techniques and tactics without the use of force when safe under the totality of the circumstances to do so. The CRB also listed factors for the officers to consider when a person is not complying and techniques and tactics officers can use for de-escalating situations. A revised letter with the CRB’s recommendations will be forwarded to Chief Nisleit early next week. At last night’s meeting, the CRB also discussed the many local protests and SDPD’s response to the protests. By a unanimous vote of 16-0, the CRB agreed to forward this item to its Policy Committee for the Committee to look at best practices for a policy recommendation to Chief Nisleit. The Policy Committee is planning to meet on Thursday, June 11 on MS Teams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and three others were injured in an early Saturday morning crash involving two cars along the southbound lanes of SR-163 in Balboa Park.The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Cabrillo Highway just south of the Quince Street overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver of a Lexus sedan rear-ended a Mazda sedan sending both cars off the highway. One of the vehicles tumbled down an embankment into a drainage ditch.The Madza was carrying two rideshare passengers in the rear seats, according to CHP. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. The other rear passenger was ejected out of the car causing the victim to suffer major injuries.Drivers of both vehicles are being treated for injuries.Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.All southbound lanes were temporarily shut down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- October is HIV/AIDS Awareness month…this year we find ourselves still in the grips of a different public health crisis.We’re highlighting the work of an organization born in the 1980’s to help LGBTQ people with HIV and AIDS.Auntie Helen’s in North Park is now meeting needs from the pandemic.10News Anchor Mary McKenzie shares the legacy of a man well-known for taking care of his community – then and now.In the late 80's Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's -- in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988. He did fluff and fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS.Fear and stigma at the time -- hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease. But word spread quickly -- about Gary's services -- and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease... and more and more of Gary's friends and clients became sick... HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100 thousand lives in the U-S in the 1980's. Many of Gary's clients who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's. Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry -- and eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.Rod Legg is now the executive director of Auntie Helen's -- which has come through some difficult times. The laundry service and the thrift store are still co-located in North Park. During the pandemic, they stretched their services to do laundry for a new group -- that needed help.“We also do COVID-19, which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie into the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that.” explains Legg.They're also expanding the store, and their outreach. They give out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers. With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries - no questions asked, no referral needed. Rod found the food, and the volunteers delivered it. At one point, to more than 300 people.“This is everybody's HIV in a sense. Do you know what I mean? We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other.” says, Rod Legg.Auntie Helen's staffs a "warm" line instead of a hot line with volunteers -- taking calls from people struggling with mental health issues. They offer yoga, meditation -- virtually for now -- and provide clients with addiction support and help with job hunting. All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham...Rod Legg remarked, “This man was way before his time. You know? And can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes?”A hero for the community, then and now...That's what we all should be doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship will be quarantined at MCAS Miramar amid coronavirus fears, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Sunday.According to the Department, the ship will dock temporarily in a non-passenger port in the San Francisco Bay. Passengers will then be transferred to several federal military facilities throughout the country for medical screening, COVID-19 testing, and a 14-day quarantine. The earliest they could arrive is Tuesday, according to a DoD spokesperson.The nearly 1,000 passengers who are California residents will complete the quarantine at MCAS Miramar and Travis Air Force Base. It's unclear how many of the 1,000 passengers will be housed at Miramar. "MCAS Miramar is preparing to support HHS and their federally mandated quarantine for Grand Princess travelers," a spokesperson for the base said. "The safety, health and well-being of our guests and crew is always our top priority, and we continue to make every effort to ensure they are safe and comfortable while they remain onboard," Princess Cruises said in a statement.So far, 11 people in the U.S. have died from the virus and at least 400 cases have so far been reported.
