SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - To protect his best friend, a Sabre Springs man found himself in a brawl with a bobcat. Bobby Abrams, a 78-year-old Vietnam veteran, said it happened Saturday morning while walking his dog Sammy. The Navy veteran is in tiptop shape; he does hundreds of push-ups a day and goes on walks up to 14 miles. "Oh yea, he was snarling, arggggg, like that!" remembers Abrams. He says he had to defend his dog and would do it again if he had to. He says their close relationship began when Abrams rescued Sammy from an abusive situation; he says they both have PTSD. "I love that dog as much as I love my momma. I love that dog, the Navy, and my momma!" said Abrams. A spokesperson says bobcats are not unusual in that area but are usually nocturnal. They speculate the animal might not have gone out that night due to bad weather and instead went out during the day.If you find yourself in a similar situation, wildlife officials say stand your ground and try to pull the animal away. They recommend avoiding going out at night when coyotes and bobcats are out. It's also advised to make loud noises and throw objects, like a rock, at the animal to try and scare it off. Officials say bobcats are typically fearful of humans. 1885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This isn't the first time the idea of an aerial tram in San Diego has been floated around. But it is the first time the idea of one from the airport has been raised.A feasibility study, completed by engineering firm WSP USA, proposed a "skyway" to connect San Diego International Airport to the convention center could be built with current aerial cableway technology.The study suggests the aerial cableway "has the potential to enhance mobility within the study area." The transit system could include intermediate stations at Santa Fe Depot, Seaport Village, the Embarcadero, and in the Marina District.Riders would also be able to connect to MTS, Coaster, and Amtrak stations, the study says.The skyway would cost about 0 million to 0 million to construct and about million to million to operate every year, the study says.The study adds the skyway could make 1.1 million and 1.6 million trips a year, or about 3,600 to 4,900 trips a day. An aerial cableway could transport about 2,400 people per hour per direction, with cabins holding eight to 12 people, according to the study.In the study, the skyway begins at the Gaslamp Quarter trolley station near Harbor Dr. and 5th Ave., and roughly follow Harbor Dr., Kettner Blvd., Broadway, and Harbor Dr. again to the airport, ultimately ending at passenger terminals. IS IT POSSIBLE?While the study determined a skyway is feasible, it did not say whether it would be the best method for mobility to alleviate traffic between the airport and downtown.A system of this kind would also be a first in the U.S. New York and Oregon are both home to point-to-point aerial cableways: the Portland Aerial Tram and Roosevelt Island Tram. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The preliminary hearing got underway Wednesday for a case that saw the California Highway Patrol reverse course on blame months after a deadly wrong-way crash.Lauren Freeman appeared in court almost a year to the day of the deadly wrong crash on the transition ramp between I-5 and I-8 near Old Town about 2 a.m. Justin Callahan, 35 , who was driving a Volkswagen Jetta, died at the scene, while Freeman and her passenger in a Toyota Camry suffered serious injuries in the crash.The CHP initially thought Callahan was driving the wrong way, eastbound in the westbound lanes, but family members told 10News it didn't make sense because he should have been heading to Ocean Beach from the South Bay after work, and not away from it. After a more thorough probe, investigators determined it was Freeman who was driving the wrong way and driving under the influence. Officers arrested her in November on charges including murder and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated."We're just hoping for justice. The truth came out through the CHP and now we have the justice system to go through," said Tommy Villafranca, Callahan's brother.On the stand, one witness says he was driving on I-8 headed toward Sunset Cliffs, when he and his passenger saw a light-colored 4-door car race past him going the wrong way."I was in the car ... noticed headlights coming in my direction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, honoring those who've selflessly served and sacrificed for the nation.Wayne Thompson, who served in the Navy for 30 years, says he attends the Mt. Soledad ceremony every year.“This world would be a lot different if we didn’t have the people that are on this wall. If they didn’t give their lives for the people in this country," said Thompson.Thompson did three tours in Vietnam and now suffers from health complications due to Agent Orange. He's had 11 seizures but says he would serve all over again if asked.“I kept wanting to serve, I don’t know, I just felt like I was doing something for the country, it’s hard to understand, but you get a fulfillment out of serving somebody," said Thompson.He says he's grateful for those who served before him and those serving now.Col.
