SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of robbing a Cherokee Point smoke shop at knifepoint, police said.The robbery was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday at MA Smoke Shop, 3543 University Ave., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The suspect, later identified as Mario Chavez, walked into the smoke shop and selected several items from a display, the officer said.He then allegedly walked up to the clerk holding a knife and demanded a lighter, Heims said. The clerk contacted police while the suspect was standing at the counter, then officers arrived a short time later and arrested Chavez, who was still in the store.Chavez was booked into San Diego Central Jail around 3:40 a.m. Friday on suspicion of robbery, according to jail records. 799

Samuel and Ronan Peterson will have an interesting story to tell for the rest of their lives, thanks to Daylight Saving Time.The infant twins — born overnight on Nov. 6, 2016 — have a strange twist to their ages because of the time change.According to Cape Cod Healthcare in Massachusetts, Ronan is the older twin despite being born 31 minutes after Samuel.How does that work?According to hospital officials, Samuel was born at 1:39 a.m. Eastern and when his twin Ronan was born 31 minutes later, the clock had reset to 1:10 a.m., instead of being 2:10 a.m., because Daylight Saving Time had come to an end.So, despite technically being 31 minutes younger, Ronan's official time of birth is listed as 29 minutes earlier than Samuel's.One of the hospital's maternity nurses, who has 40 years on the job, said she'd never seen anything like it.Seth Peterson, the boys' father, figured something strange was going to happen due to his wife Emily giving birth on the night of Daylight Saving Time's end."I said earlier that night that they were either going to be born on two different days or the time change was going to come into play," he said, according to Cape Cod Healthcare.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. Kate Brown says “dozens of people” are missing from the large wildfires that have burned across the state.Brown made the announcement at a news briefing Friday afternoon, and said the reports of missing people come from blazes in southern Oregon near Medford and the northern part of the state near the state capital of Salem.At least four wildfire deaths of have been reported in Oregon.Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters dropping fire retardant and water, battled two large wildfires Friday that threatened to merge near the most populated part of Oregon, including the suburbs of Portland.The number of people ordered to evacuate statewide because of fires rose to an estimated 500,000 — more than 10% of the state’s 4.2 million people, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reported late Thursday.The Oregon Convention Center in Portland was among the buildings being transformed into shelters for evacuees. Portland, shrouded in smoke from the fires, on Friday had the worst air quality of the world’s major cities, according to IQAir.Gov. SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. She is planning a fundraiser in mid November. 1542
