The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in a report on Tuesday that the number of people infected by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas has tripled from 2004 through 2016. And as the number of infections increase, the CDC says the US is not prepared to reverse the trend. According to CDC figures, 27,388 cases of disease from mosquitoes, ticks and fleas were reported in 2004. In 2016, that number had increased to 96,075. “Zika, West Nile, Lyme, and chikungunya—a growing list of diseases caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, tick, or flea—have confronted the U.S. in recent years, making a lot of people sick. And we don’t know what will threaten Americans next,” said CDC Director Robert R. The Flores family has been farming dates for three generations.For the past few years, Marco Flores, owner of San Marcos Date Farm, says he’s seen major changes in temperature and weather patterns.“It’s drier than it used to be,” he said of the land his father bought in California’s Coachella Valley more than 55 years ago. “It used to be a lot more moist before.”These are conditions his 300 fruit-producing palm trees don’t like.“Sometimes there’s no rain,” Flores said. “The impact of climate change is definitely doing something to them.”Similar concerns are being expressed across the planet.“Climate change is impacting agriculture and farmers abilities,” said Paul Minehart of the Syngenta Group, a global agricultural innovation company.Minehart’s team recently published a study showing 72% of farmers they interviewed from around the world are worried about climate changes impacting crop yields.“It’s coming down to, especially in the United States, is the unpredictable weather patterns that are beginning to emerge,” he said.Minehart says those unpredictable weather patterns include unusual droughts and flooding in America and extremely arid conditions in other countries. The coronavirus pandemic is now starting to cause sporting events in 2021 to become canceled.On Thursday, the NHL announced that it has canceled the 2021 Winter Classic and NHL All-Star Game.The Winter Classic has become the NHL’s signature outdoor event for the last decade, generally played outdoors on New Year’s Day. The game was originally slated to be played between Minnesota and St. Louis in Target Field.The NHL All-Star Game, originally scheduled for Jan. 31, 2020, has been canceled. The NHL planned on playing the game in Sunrise, Florida, home of the Florida Panthers.The NHL said it intends on playing a Winter Classic in Minnesota and an NHL All-Star Game in Florida in the near future.“Fan participation, both in arenas and stadiums as well as in the ancillary venues and events that we stage around the Winter Classic and All-Star Weekend, is integral to the success of our signature events,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Content Officer Steve Mayer. “Because of the uncertainty as to when we will be able to welcome our fans back to our games, we felt that the prudent decision at this time was to postpone these celebrations until 2022 when our fans should be able to enjoy and celebrate these tentpole events in-person, as they were always intended. The Florida State Senate passed a bill Monday that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which can make it easier for a semi-automatic weapon to function like an automatic rifle.The "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act" (SB 7026) would also give law enforcement more power to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat and provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and for mental health services.The Senate measure comes more than two weeks after a gunman killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Stoneman Douglas students and parents have lobbied lawmakers to pass stricter gun control measures.The bill now moves to the Florida House. The death of another Fort Hood soldier is under investigation after he was found unresponsive at a nearby lake.On Friday, July 17 at 12:07 a.m., deputy’s with the Bell County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the area of the Stillhouse Hollow Lake Dam after fishermen in a boat located what they believed to be a body in the water at the base of the dam.Upon arrival, deputy’s found the body 26-year-old Pvt. Mejhor Morta was located in the vicinity of Stillhouse Hollow Lake — located about 15 miles east of the Army base.An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin.A preliminary autopsy shows the cause of death to be consistent with drowning, but at this time, a full autopsy report has not been completed or released by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Dallas, Texas.Morta's body was found just weeks after officials found the dismembered remains of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen — a soldier stationed on Fort Hood who went missing in April. Officials have not said that the two cases are linked.Morta was from Pensacola, Florida, and entered the Army in September 2019, as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle mechanic. He has been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since May 2020.Friends of Morta say his family is from the Philippines."I reached out to his sister today and they are currently in the Philippines," said Hunter Proffitt, a friend of Morta.
