For a long time we had the Coast Guard helicopter pilots coming in all the time," Lutzius recalled. "In the 70s, it was like a cop bar, they called it. I know it was like a biker bar for a while."Lutzius ran through the times of the day when certain clientele roll through: The neighbors first, those heading home from work second, people out for dinner next, the late-night crowd after, then finally the late-night workers just getting off a shift.Behind him, photos of past guests: Locals, military pilots, sailors, an array of aircraft nose art.He recalls the former Aero Club owners as well. One owner used to leave the keys for guests to lock up at the end of the night. Another owner was actually a group of Greyhound bus drivers."A lot of characters came and went ... A bar is an awesome place for the neighborhood because it's sort of a meeting place," Lutzius said. "Everybody catches up on what's going on."While not an owner, Lutzius said one frequent guest used to be a dog. The bar's then-owner would give it a free beer.Today, the bar continues to serve an eclectic crowd, boasting 1,200 different types of whiskey. The wall behind the bar is clad in bottles glistening against a ceiling covered with strings of lights.While the whiskey sign outside the bar reads 900, rest assured there's much more. Lutzius says it just became too much to continue updating it.But how did they all get there? That's on Lutzius."I guess I'm just an obsessive person. It may not even be logical, you know, to do it. But just because of my personality we'd just buy anything we can buy," Lutzius said. "We ended up with about 1,200 whiskeys ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A judge ruled Friday that Alvin Quarles, known as the “Bolder Than Most Rapist," will continue to stay in a state hospital until at least December. A status hearing was held Friday morning to get an update on the location of where he will live. The search is still ongoing to find a location, and the judge has given the court a 90-day extension to do that. In the meantime, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has issued an appeal to pump the brakes on Quarles’ release. The Deputy District Attorney, Jessica Coto, says they are attempting to make sure Quarles is not released into the public before he is ready. “The evidence showed that the release of Mr. Quarles was premature and that he still poses a danger to the community,” says Coto. There have been many evidentiary hearings during this process that have not been open to the public. Quarles' victims feel they should have a right to know what was said behind closed doors. The DA's office is hoping that will be reversed during the appeal process. “It makes me shaky for myself personally, and it makes me shaky for the young people of our community, who is his demographic, and who I think really will be at risk,” said survivor Mary Taylor. In the 1980s, Quarles sexually assaulted more than 10 women, often holding them at knifepoint, forcing their boyfriends or husbands to watch as be brutally attacked them. He was sentenced to 50 years behind bars but was moved to Colinga State Hospital years ago to get treatment for sexually violent predators. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two men are dead after a shooting near a Mountain View park Sunday afternoon. Two black men, ages 33 and 37, were shot in the upper body, San Diego Police said. Both men died at the hospital.The shooting happened around 1:20 p.m. Sunday near South 40th Street and Ocean View Boulevard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video captured shots ringing out, apparently pelting cars in a Rolando neighborhood, including the vehicles of a family already impacted by the pandemic.A shattered windshield is what Ondria Aviles found when she went to her Dodge Journey, parked outside her home along Marraco Drive on Monday night."Just couldn't believe that had happened," said Aviles.Her husband came out and found the driver side window of his truck - also parked on the street - was also shattered."My husband had a BB pellet hole in his window," said Aviles.Turns the moments their vehicles were vandalized were captured by neighbor Ryan Dick's surveillance camera. Just before 7:30 that night, a red sedan was recorded driving through when three shots rang out in a span of three seconds. The final two shots sounded near Aviles' vehicles.According to posts on the Nextdoor app, at least four other cars and homes were struck in a several-mile stretch. "Couldn't imagine if they missed and hit someone, a young child. We have three kids," said Aviles.Along with her outrage, there is frustration. The bill for the window damage will be a hardship.
