SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall.The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University will begin testing all students who live on campus for COVID-19, the school said Tuesday.According to the university, the testing will start on September 16. After the initial phase of testing, the school will begin testing students at random. “Following the initial phase of benchmark testing for all students in residence this week, we will then launch random testing for the on-campus housing population. During each round of testing, a set of individuals from each residential community group will be randomly sampled to be re-tested,” the school said.The news comes as 648 students tested positive or presumptive positive for the virus.According to SDSU, 644 students have so far tested positive for the virus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Schools across San Diego County can reopen for in-person learning if they choose to on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as long as our COVID-19 case rate stays low enough through Sunday, Aug. 31.The county will be providing free testing for all school employees, which is strongly recommended by the California Department of Public Health.“What we’re going to be doing is making testing available at over 20 County-coordinated sites,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “In addition to that, we’re working with the San Diego Office of Education to open additional testing sites regionally that will be dedicated to school staff.”County officials say testing for asymptomatic children is discouraged, but if parents feel the need to have their children tested, they should consult with their pediatrician.Eight to ten school districts plan to reopen within the next two weeks to one month, according to Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County Office of Education Superintendent.“If there’s 5% of positive cases identified in one school, then the entire school would need to shut down,” said Gothold.More than 100 schools, mostly private, applied for waivers to reopen for in-person learning.
