CAPE TOWN, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The research vessel SA Agulhas has set off from Cape Town on a 10-day polar tour intended to promote dialogue on climate change, authorities confirmed on Sunday.The trip was designed to mark the 17th Climate Conference of the Parties (COP17) to be held in Durban later this month, according to the Department of Environmental Affairs.The voyage, which set off Saturday noon with scientists, academics, students and journalists aboard, would host exhibitions, symposiums and lectures from climate change scientists on the work of the polar research vessel, spokesman Zolile Nqayi said in a statement.The exhibitions and lectures would also highlight the various scientific activities undertaken by the department and its partners in Antarctica and the Southern Oceans, according to the South African Press Association (SAPA).Apart from her research and supply work, the Agulhus also helped to rescue the Magdalena Oldendorff, which became stuck in thick ice in June 2002.In December the SA Agulhas would make its final voyage to Antarctica before retirement.The Agulhas, which has been in service for 33 years, would be replaced by a new vessel under construction in Finland."She served us very well," said Dr Monde Mayekiso, deputy director general of oceans and coasts."The new vessel will have enhanced technologies and capabilities to further understand the ocean environment and to bring that understanding to an increasing number of South Africans, " he said.

TEHRAN, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Iran is going to launch domestically- built Navid satellite by Safir satellite launcher by the end of March 2012, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.Navid (promise) is a research satellite and is currently undergoing pre-launch tests, said the report without further details.In June, Iran put the Rasad (surveillance) satellite in the orbit to render images to the country.Iran put a satellite into orbit in 2009 and sent some small animals into space in 2010. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Google is running a secret research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the tech giant invests to experiment and invent what may be world-changing technologies for the future, U.S. media reported on Monday.According to The New York Times, at the lab dubbed Google X, engineers are working at some 100 projects from robots, smart refrigerators to Internet-enabled dinner plates and a "space elevator," a proposed non-rocket space launch structure.An unnamed Google engineer familiar with the lab told the newspaper that it was run as mysteriously as the CIA with two officers, a nondescript one for logistics on the company's Mountain View campus and one for robots in a secret location.Scientists working at the lab include many roboticists and electrical engineers hired from Microsoft, Nokia labs, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and New York University. Google's co-founder Sergey Brin is said to be "deeply involved" in Google X.The lab is reportedly headed by Sebastian Thrun, one of the world's top robotics and artificial intelligence experts. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Computer chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) on Thursday said it plans to cut its global workforce by about 10 percent in a move to reduce operational costs.The layoff will occur across all functions globally and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of the first quarter of 2012, the company said.The cuts will amount to about 1,400 jobs, according to estimates by analysts.Combined with implementing efficiencies across the company's operations, AMD expected that the workforce reduction will result in operational savings of more than 200 million U.S. dollars in 2012."Reducing our cost structure and focusing our global workforce on key growth opportunities will strengthen AMD's competitiveness and allow us to aggressively pursue a balanced set of strategic activities designed to accelerate future growth," Rory Read, AMD's chief executive officer, said in a statement.As the world's second largest maker of processors for computers, AMD has been suffering from the slowdown of global PC market and is seen as slow to move into new mobile device market.The operational savings will help accelerate the company's future growth in lower power, emerging markets and in the cloud computing field, AMD said.
