Parents are considering different options when it comes to school as they manage the pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic. One option is called micro-schooling, which is basically a small school. It could have regular classroom space or operate out of someone's home, using remote curriculums.“Usually there's a theme attached to it, or a certain population they're serving, or they're trying to accomplish something that perhaps isn't getting accomplished in larger schools,” said Dr. Maureen O'Shaughnessy, Executive Director of the Micro-School Coalition.O'Shaughnessy started the Micro-School Coalition. She hopes micro-schools can help ease drop-out rates, making sure no kid falls through the cracks. She says they also allow teachers to build relationships with each student and focus on their passions.“We all thrive when we're seen and heard and valued, and that can't always happen if a teacher has 149 other kids to teach that day,” said O'Shaughnessy. She says parents in the Seattle area have turned to social media with questions about logistics or inclusion. That's also true for a mom in Boston who has created a Facebook group for parents and educators interested in micro-schooling."We want to utilize curriculum that our school system is working very hard to create,” said Jennifer Quadrozzi, who started the Massachusetts "Micro-Schooling" Resource Group. “We by no means are saying that's not good enough for us. We wish, in the perfect world, we could send them back to school and learn what teachers have to learn, but, for various reasons, we are uncomfortable doing that."The Micro-School Coalition offers free information sessions and podcasts if you want to learn more.O'Shaughnessy hopes the conversation on micro-schooling will increase scrutiny of our current system, which she calls outdated. 1825

OTTAWA – The coronavirus pandemic has complicated nearly every aspect of our lives, even the most intimate parts, like sex. It’s always important to practice safe sex to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, but now health officials say COVID-19 should be considered as well and precautions should be taken.Wednesday, Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, issued a statement with tips on staying safe from the virus while engaging in sexual activities.“Sexual health is an important part of our overall health,” said Tam. “However, sex can be complicated in the time of COVID-19, especially for those without an intimate partner in their household or whose sexual partner is at higher risk for COVID-19.”If you choose to engage in an in-person sexual encounter with someone outside of your household or close contacts, Tam says to skip kissing and avoid face-to-face contact or closeness. She even went as far as suggesting using a mask that covers the nose and mouth.Tam says you can also reduce your risk by monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms and not having sex if someone is experiencing those symptoms.Tam also suggests limiting alcohol and drug use, so you and your partner are able to make safe decisions.Additionally, you should be aware if you or your partner may be at higher risk for more severe outcomes of COVID-19. That includes people with underlying medical conditions, those with compromised immune systems, and people living with obesity.“Current evidence indicates there is a very low likelihood of contracting the novel coronavirus through semen or vaginal fluids,” said Tam. “However, even if the people involved do not have symptoms, sexual activity with new partners does increase your risk of getting or passing COVID-19 through close contact, like kissing. Remember as with all social interactions, try to keep your number of close contacts low if possible.” 1919

Phil Bredesen, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee, is running with Taylor Swift's decision to endorse him, touting how rare it is for the pop star to wade into politics in a new digital video and publicly thanking her on Twitter. In a video, simply titled "Taylor Swift," Bredesen's campaign cribs Swift's song, "Look What You Made Me Do" with a slate aimed at his opponent, Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, that reads, "Look What Marsha Made Her Do." The video then proceeds to clip together news coverage of Swift's unexpected endorsement, with reporters repeatedly noting the move is "out of the norm" for Swift.Swift, in a lengthy Instagram post on Sunday, decried Blackburn, a Republican representative who has run toward President Donald Trump in her bid for the Senate."Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn," Swift wrote. "As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me."Swift slammed Blackburn for not backing equal pay for women, against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and for her views on gay marriage."These are not MY Tennessee values," she wrote before backing Bredesen and Rep. Jim Cooper, who is running for Congress in a safely Democratic seat.Bredesen is looking to surprise Democrats and Republicans alike and win a Senate seat in Tennessee, a state that backed Trump by 26 percentage points in 2016.On Tuesday he congratulated Swift for winning an award at the American Music Awards and tweeted a seemingly homemade video thanking her for her endorsement."Taylor, I want to just say thanks so much for your endorsement this past weekend and for the very kind words you said about me," said Bredesen, the former governor of Tennessee. "When people like you who are in a position of influence speak out on issue, it's really important and I admire you for it very much." 1998

Parents often worry about their kids riding the school bus. But waiting for the bus or getting off after school can pose a far greater danger. The risk was highlighted this week, as at least five children lost their lives when they were hit by drivers near school bus stops, authorities said. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents.Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents -- less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show. But more than one-third of school-age children who died in those school-transportation-related wrecks -- 102 children -- were on foot when they were killed, including some hit by school buses, the data show. Most of the others were riding in vehicles that were not school buses.Nothing suggests the threat to students waiting for rides to school is rising, and safety experts say the school bus is still the safest way for a child to ride to school. 1070

Outdoor equipment retailer REI announced they are looking to sell their brand new corporate headquarters in Washington, as they embrace working from home and remote work options.“The dramatic events of 2020 have challenged us to reexamine and rethink every aspect of our business and many of the assumptions of the past. That includes where and how we work,” said REI President and CEO Eric Artz, in a video call with employees Wednesday. “As a result, our new experience of 'headquarters' will be very different than the one we imagined more than four years ago.”The company’s headquarters is being built in the Seattle area, in Bellevue, and is roughly 400,000 square feet and sits on eight acres of land. Corporate staff was planning on moving in to the newly-completed building this summer, according to the Seattle Times. REI transitioned to nearly 100 percent remote work in early March for corporate staff. Washington reported some of the earliest cases of coronavirus in the country.Retail stores closed in March across the country and recently reopened. The company admits the sale will also benefit them financially. They cite safety and preventative measures retail stores and the company have taken during the pandemic, in addition to slower sales with the temporary closure of stores.Artz and the board of directors have taken paycuts and in July, REI announced a 5 percent reduction in staff.REI says they will embrace remote work as an “engrained, supported, and normalized model for headquarters employees, offering flexibility for more employees to live and work outside of the Puget Sound region and shrinking the co-op’s carbon footprint.” 1665
