Now, the state-owned fairgrounds has laid off more than half of its staff and has asked Sacramento for million in bailout money."They need a new vision for the future and they need it desperately to solve their financial problems," said Del Mar Councilman Dwight Worden.Worden said affordable housing is an ideal solution. The city wants to team up with the fairgrounds to build upwards of 51 affordable homes on the property. On Monday, the council could approve a formal memo to submit to the fairgrounds on its vision.As it stands, Del Mar has no affordable housing and as such faces steep state penalties - including fines, lawsuits, and even loss of development control."In a place like Del Mar, where the ground costs a million dollars an inch, anything where we have to buy land is immediately not affordable," Worden said.The idea to put housing has been talked about for years. Most recently, in June, a Los Angeles-based developer proposed to put modular homes on the property to temporarily shelter the homeless during the outbreak, but pulled the project after community opposition."That was a hornet's nest," Worden said. "We've been telling them 'look, let's work on this long term affordable housing, where we get credit and we know how to help you do that successfully.'"Worden said this would be different, because it would give people such as fairgrounds workers, emergency medical technicians, teachers, and restaurant servers to permanently live close to where they work.Worden says the city has picked out five locations on the fairgrounds, mostly around the perimeter.The cost is still not clear, but Del Mar may ask Solana Beach the city of San Diego to participate, and see if they can get partial credit for their housing requirements.Del Mar must built 163 new housing units by 2029. DENVER - A Colorado gun store owner who appeared on the reality TV show 'American Guns' on Discovery Channel has been sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for tax fraud and dealing without a license.Richard Wyatt, 54, was sentenced to 78 months on Thursday.Wyatt operated the Gunsmoke gun shop in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He was convicted last year on 10 counts, including not reporting income to the IRS.According to court records, Wyatt surrendered his federal firearms license in 2012 for unspecified violations but continued to sell guns from his store by working with another gun shop that had a license. Prosecutors said Wyatt entered sales from his store into the computer system as "miscellaneous" instead of gun sales and had customers go to the other store to fill out the background check paperwork.The court found that a total of 490 guns were involved in Wyatt's illegal operation, all of which the court ordered forfeited. 938

DENVER – Time Magazine has named its first-ever "Kid of the Year" — 15-year-old Gitanjali Rao from Colorado.Gitanjali, who lives in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree, was chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 nominees for her "exceptional leadership" in finding solutions to societal problems such as cyberbullying and water contamination, according to a brief description of the selection process from Time."It was exciting. All my friends are really excited; they've been freaking out about it all day, as have I — as I should — and it's just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience," Gitanjali said over a Zoom call Thursday.Gitanjali said she was given the news of her most recent accomplishment by Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador Angelia Jolie. She called the experience "surreal" and not something she would have ever imagined.And while she may be the first-ever Kid of the Year, it isn't the first accomplishment for the bright teenager.In 2018, when Gitanjali was 12 years old, she spoke with Scripps station KMGH in Denver after she was named America's Top Young Scientist for creating Thetys, a device that detects lead in water — an invention inspired by the water crisis in Flint, Mich."I think there's so much we can do with technology; we just have to apply it in the right way, and that's really what I wanted to start doing," Gitanjali said Thursday when asked about her motivation for helping others. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely. The number of horse deaths has dropped in recent years at Del Mar, with four in all of 2018.Dr. Vale encourages people to come to the track during morning training to see the care that goes into horses outside of racing. 1507
