SAN DIEGO, California — With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two years ago the Norton Sound was docked in San Diego Bay and burned for several days. Now, San Diego is hiring an outside consultant to look into the cargo fire. San Diego Fire gave 10News a statement Friday. They didn’t offer specifics about what the consultant might recommend, but say the focus is to determine if any additional equipment or training is needed when dealing with emergencies on the bay. Back in 2017, Harbor Police told 10News, “It was to my understanding that the furthest a firefighter made it was 6 feet before they started getting pushed about the fire.” Looking back, even businesses remember how horrible the smoke was over the days the fire burned, “People stopped sitting outside and employees complained about it affecting their health.” says Edgewater Grill assistant manager, Sergio Velasco. While the smoke bellowed out of the ship for nearly a week, no one was injured and the fire stayed contained and didn’t spread to any other structures. SAN DIEGO, Calif, (KGTV) - An information meeting Thursday evening is one of the final steps before plans to expand the Miramar Landfill are sent to the state. Currently, the landfill is expected to close Sept. of 2025, but this new plans will extend that to an estimated closure of Nov. of 2031, and also increase the height of the landfill by a maximum of 25 feet. Program Manager for the Solid Waste Local Enforcement Agency Bill Prinz said these dates could change depending on how quickly trash is put into the landfill. He also said this increase in capacity means about 10 million cubic yards of trash are being added to the already about 87 million cubic yards. Currently, 87,760,000 cubic yards of Gross Airspace are being used, and the plan will bring the maximum height to 97,354,7355 cubic yards of Gross Airspace. The meeting Thursday, May 28 is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be information focused. The public can tune in virtually to listen, ask questions and offer feedback, however no decisions will be made. Prinz said the LEA will send the plans, including the feedback from the meeting, to Sacramento, and the state will have 60 days to either accept or deny the plan. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple woke up to find guns pointed in their face inside their own home. The home invasion happened on the 3200 block of Bramson Place just before 7 a.m. on Monday. Officers say the couple was sleeping when they found the suspects inside their home. The suspects were masked and one of them also had a knife. Police say the burglars put the knife to the man's throat, cutting him several times. Neighbors were too afraid to talk on camera but told 10News said they heard all of the commotion. One witness said they saw the two men running towards a nearby parking lot and getting into a red car. Police don't have a suspect description since the suspects were wearing masks.
