ESCONDIDO (KGTV) – An Escondido couple is out thousands of dollars after falling for a sophisticated truck scam“You hear about it everywhere, but you’re like it’s not going to happen to me,” Terha Newby said.   Terha and her husband, Chris, found the perfect truck for sale on Craigslist back in September. Someone from El Monte was selling a Chevy Silverado 2600 HD for about ,000. “The registration matches the pink slip, the VIN, everything. You’re like, 'Its good!'” Terha said.  But it was far from good.It turns out the truck was stolen out of Orange County last year. Afterwards, someone replaced the VINs on the truck with a duplicate VIN of a truck that someone owns in Texas. They even had matching paperwork to go with it. But the VINs set off an alarm for the DMV when the Newbys went to get their new truck registered.“The VIN that was in the vehicle belonged to truck in Texas, and it was on a lien,” Terha said. “These guys are professionals, they’re out there, and that’s all they do for a living.”Chris said the seller gave them a Carfax report, but it was a fake one. He now regrets not getting their own. “From now on, for a fee, Carfax would have prevented it,” Chris said. The stolen Silverado was impounded and went back to the insurance company of the truck’s original owner. Luckily, they sold it back to the Newbys for about ,000, which they gladly agreed to.“They told us this is not something we do, but they felt bad for our situation,” Tehra said. “Still tough we had to re-buy anything.”“I’m just glad I have a car,” Chris said. The CHP gave these car-buying tips when buying from a third person private party. 1700

ESTES PARK, Colo. — The family of 20-year-old Micah Tice, the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School student missing on Longs Peak near Estes Park, Colorado, criticized the National Park Service during a Friday evening press conference.Benjamin Tice claims that officials with Rocky Mountain National Park, which has suspended the search for the 20-year-old man missing for two weeks in wintry weather, have not done enough to find his son. “Limited searches were conducted and directed by the National Park Service and their search and rescue from November 27 to December 3,” Benjamin Tice said. “A total of six days of boots on the ground.”Micah Tice has been missing for nearly two weeks. He was last seen hiking on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park on November 24. Rangers found Micah Tice's vehicle at the Longs Peak trailhead the afternoon of November 26.Watch the press conference in the video player below:Benjamin Tice believes his son could have sought shelter in an area the National Park Service has not searched.“Hikers who’ve gone to this non-National Park Service searched zone report that there are numerous shelters that a hiker could be protected from severe weather elements,” he said.Efforts to locate the missing hiker began on Tuesday, November 27, three days after Micah Tice was last seen. Search resources have included ground crews, trained dogs and helicopters. However, Benjamin Tice said his family has been denied access to additional resources in the search for their son.“Despite our family’s pleas with the National Park Service to request assistance from the military, and specifically Fort Carson’s Mountaineering Division, we were repeatedly denied and were told that the National Park Service had sufficient resources,“ he said.In a statement to KMGH, Kyle Patterson, the public affairs officer for Rocky Mountain National Park, detailed the park's efforts in locating the cadet."The search for Micah has continued in severe winter conditions. The number of rescuers in the field beginning the morning of November 27 through Monday, December 3, has been appropriate given the difficulty of the high alpine environment, and the safety of the rescuers," Patterson wrote.Patterson said the park used military assets during the days-long search for Micah, including the mountaineering club from United States Air Force Academy. Patterson said the park was not contacted by Fort Carson to provide assistance.During the Friday press conference, Benjamin Tice pleaded for help from state and federal officials, including President Donald Trump.“President Trump, we plead for your help," Benjamin Tice said. "Secretary Zinke has the ability to request military assistance, and we have thus far not received word that this was formally done, despite verbal understandings that this was done. Secretary Zinke, we plead for your help. Colorado Governor Hickenlooper has the ability to activate National Guard troops to assist with the Micah Tice rescue. Gov. Hickenlooper, we plead for your help. Colorado Governor-Elect Jared Polis has tremendous influence in this area as congressman. Governor-Elect Polis, we plead for your help."Friends of the family and other experienced hikers plan to search the area again this weekend. They say activity from Micah Tice’s cellphone was recorded November 25 around 10,000 feet, the elevation where the weekend search will focus on.The National Park Service suspended their search Tuesday. Officials say they could resume if conditions are favorable. 3620

Fans of true crime will get more than they bargain for this weekend, as HBO releases a six-part documentary series based on the book of the same name, I’ll Be Gone In The Dark. The book written by Michelle McNamara follows the writer's own investigation into the suspected crimes and capture of Joseph DeAngelo, better known as the "Golden State Killer." DeAngelo was arrested on suspicion of at least 13 murders and more than 50 rapes across California in April 2018. This series, airing Sunday on HBO, comes as DeAngelo pleads guilty Monday to dozens of crimes in return for being spared the death penalty. But McNamara's writing doesn't just follow the facts and police reports that spanned over the 1970s and '80s as the Golden State Killer terrorized California. I'll Be Gone In The Dark outlines the true stories of victims as well as McNamara's own experience searching for answers. On Sunday, HBO's event will share the detective story told in McNamara’s own words, through exclusive original recordings and excerpts from her book read by actor Amy Ryan. 1067

Facebook has suspended 200 apps for possible misuse of user data in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.Facebook said in a blog post Monday that it has investigated thousands of apps after it emerged that Cambridge Analytica had harvested information on about 87 million users without their knowledge. It did not name the apps that have been suspended but said they would be subject to a more thorough investigation into how they handle user data.Cambridge Analytica, which worked on President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, used data collected via an app developed by University of Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan. The app offered a personality test, but Facebook users who downloaded it also gave the professor permission to collect data on their location, their friends and content they had "liked."Kogan provided that data to Cambridge Analytica, in a breach of Facebook's rules. Facebook said it asked Cambridge Analytica to delete the data in 2015, but learned in March that this had not happened.Kogan has said he suspects thousands of other developers and data scientists used similar methods to gather information on Facebook users. In response to a backlash that cost the company billions in lost market value, Facebook said it would investigate every app that had access to large amounts of data prior to 2014, when it tightened its controls.Ime Archibong, Facebook's vice president of product partnerships, said in Monday's post that the company will ban any app found to have misused data. He said Facebook would notify users about such bans and make it possible for them to check whether their data was misused."We are investing heavily to make sure this investigation is as thorough and timely as possible," Archibong said.Cambridge Analytica, which announced it was closing earlier this month, has denied misusing Facebook data for the Trump campaign, and maintains its employees behaved ethically and lawfully.  1970

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance video catches a woman chatting and stealing inside an Encinitas boutique.A missing necklace was the first clue. When Heidi Linkogle looked at her shop's surveillance video, the theft was revealed, move by move."Unbelievable. Devastated," said Linkogle. On Saturday afternoon at the Radix Boutique, a woman in her 40s walked in.RELATED: Police investigating high-end liquor theft in University City"She got a few items off clearance outside and went shopping. Really chatty and unassuming," said Linkogle.Linkogle's assistant was working that day. In the video, the shopper is seen picking out two pairs of earrings and a bracelet, before ducking into the changing room. When she emerges from the dressing room, she has an armful of clothes but there is no sign of the jewelry. The woman leaves the shop briefly and returns with a big purse. She picks out some clothes, walks out of view, bends down and stuffs her purse."She is bold and definitely experienced," said Linkogle.RELATED: Thief steals mom's car packed with kids' Christmas gifts Soon after, at the register - and with the clerk's back turned - the woman is recorded grabbing a necklace and placing it into wallet, just as the clerk returns. The woman chats up the clerk before paying for the clearance items. As she leaves, there is more sticky fingers, as she stuffs more clothing into the shopping bag. The total loss is nearly 0. "It hurts. It really does," said Linkogle. In the past year, she's seen an increase in shoplifting at her shop. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff's Station at 760-966-3500. 1665
