BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday urged European political and business leaders not to join the "chorus" on pressuring China on the appreciation of the Renminbi, or RMB.China's trade surplus was explained by the specific structures of the economies involved in international trade instead of the exchange rate of the RMB, Wen said at the Sixth China-EU Business Summit here."The (past) appreciations of the RMB did not lead to any changes in the trend (of China recording trade surplus)," Wen said, referring to the fact that China continued to record trade surpluses after it initiated an exchange rate reform in 1994 although the RMB has appreciated by an accumulated 55 percent since then. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addresses the 6th China-European Union Business Summit in Brussels, capital of Belgium, Oct. 6, 2010.China also continued to record trade surpluses against the United States after it initiated a second exchange rate reform in 2005 to allow the RMB to appreciate 22 percent against the U.S. dollar since then, Wen said."The trade issue should not be politicized. It is an issue of the (trade) structure," the premier said.Chinese enterprises were still mostly at the lower end of the global industry chain. China has a surplus in commodity trade but deficits in the trade of services. It has surpluses against the United States and the European Union but deficits against South Korea, Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Wen said.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday. All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said. The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. It also cherished the hard-won mutual understanding and trust between the two countries, believing the bilateral ties could withstand tests and continue to develop.China would also work with South Korea to boost cooperation in East Asia, Wen added.Lee appreciated China's support for Seoul G20 summit, saying his country would keep working with China to improve bilateral ties and play an active role in safeguarding peace and stability as well as deepening cooperation within the region.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday said the country's 12th five-year development plan, starting in 2011, should reflect the consensus of the entire society and motivate people from all walks of life.He also encouraged national political advisors to actively offer suggestions for the plan.Wen made the remarks in Beijing at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body. The national political advisors convened their meeting two days after the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee ended a four-day plenary session that set the outline of the 12th five-year plan, with key objectives in economic restructuring and improving living standards nationwide among others. In Wednesday's meeting, Wen said the State Council, or the Cabinet, would draw up the plan as outlined by the CPC Central Committee. He also said the theme of the 12th five-year plan was "scientific development" and would require China to accelerate the transformation of its economic growth mode, which he called "a strategic task of great urgency."The meeting was presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday ordered centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to achieve greater development over the next five years.Zhang also required the SOEs to boost efforts to reform while optimizing industrial structures and reinforcing management. He made the remarks during an inspection tour of the China Electronics Technology Group Co., one of the nation's 122 centrally-administered SOEs.Zhang said the centrally-administered SOEs, as the backbone of China's economy, should focus on increasing their competitive edge while developing hi-tech industries and nurturing their own brands with independent intellectual property rights.During the January-to-September period, the combined net profit of China's centrally-administered SOEs totalled 641.65 billion yuan (96.6 billion U.S. dollars), up 55 percent year on year.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation in China, is likely to rise 4.1 percent in October after accelerating to a 23-month high of 3.6 percent in September, the Bank of Communications forecast on Wednesday. The bank, China's fifth largest lender, said in a report that the index would see moderate dips in the coming two months amid decreasing demand due to the slowing economy. But oversupply of liquidity at home, surging food prices, rising labor costs, and pressures caused by imported inflation would mean very limited room for the index to drop, the report said. The report predicts China's CPI would rise 3.1 percent for the entire year of 2010, topping the government's target to keep the inflation rate under 3 percent. It also forecast food prices would rise further during the first half of 2011.Food prices, which account for one-third of weighting in calculating the CPI in China, climbed 8 percent in September, pushing the CPI to the highest level in nearly two years. Food prices had risen 7.5 percent in August, 6.8 percent in July, and 5.7 percent in June.
