SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Fertility Center will be the first in the nation to deploy new robotic technology that will help store, track and maintain frozen embryos for In-Vitro Fertilization.The TMRW Robot will be in use by next month at the center in Carmel Valley. It will take 17,000 measurements every day to make sure the embryos are kept in prime conditions.It also codes each embryo and egg with a specific Radio Frequency ID to make sure scientists can track each one."There needs to be this level of trust between the mother and father and the caretakers of their embryos," says Dr. Michael Kettel with the SDFC. "I think this goes one step further in building that trust."Since IVF treatment began, most of the storage and measurements taken on embryos has been done by hand, in tanks that hold up to 1,000 samples. The TMRW Robot will have room for nearly 20,000 embryos and make the process fully automatic. Doctors say that will remove any possibility of human error."We can't make a mistake," says SDFC Laboratory Director Bill Venier. "This machine will not let us make a mistake."IVF mistakes have been in the news recently as families have filed lawsuits over embryos being given to the wrong parents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District approved a plan Tuesday night that outlines how the district plans to reopen in the fall. The school board voted unanimously to move forward with a plan that would allow parents to decide if their students return to campus in the fall of 2020 or continue distance learning at home. Students returning to in-person learning will go to school for the full day of class every day, not a staggered schedule. All in-person learning is subject to federal and local health guidelines like wearing a mask, 6 feet of social distancing, and frequent hand washing. If parents feel their child is not ready to go back to campus, they can continue online. The district called it "Distance Learning 2.0," an improvement to the current online learning in place. The board voted to move forward with the plan despite only having enough funding for only half of the school year. The second half is dependent on federal funding. This does not mean the district would run out of money for the year; it means all students would have to return to online learning for the second half of the year. School board members said this vote was just the beginning of a long process to restart school in the fall, adding that things could be updated as local and state guidelines change. 1323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Valley Fire has forced many East County residents to evacuate, but one homeowner said he and his family have decided to stay in their home and ride the situation out.Leo Prado told ABC 10News, “Where are we going to go? It’s not like we just have luggage and we can go into a hotel. We have animals here.”Prado said picking up and leaving his home in the Deerhorn Valley area, near Jamul, isn’t an easy task, especially with horses and dogs on his property.Prado and his family are staying put, as their area is only under a voluntary evacuation as of Tuesday afternoon.According to Prado, his property has not had power since the Valley Fire started on Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The second phase of the San Diego's styrofoam ban went into effect Friday. Local restaurants are ditching styrofoam for environmentally friendly products. Customers will see more sustainable items made from paper and aluminum. The transition to more sustainable produces also comes with a price. "It's a little more expensive but we understand why we have to do it," said Maggie Rojas from Giorgino's Cheesesteaks in Golden Hill. "Little by little we started the transition, so we didn't wait until the last minute to do it.""We all care about the environment so we want to help out," said Rojas. "It’s a big problem."There are some exceptions to the rules. Grocery stores will be able to use styrofoam trays for packaging raw meat, fish and poultry through 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is still dealing with a convalescent plasma shortage. The plasma can be used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19, but donations from gay men could be turned away if they don’t meet certain requirements.The donation restrictions received national attention after talk show host Andy Cohen says he was turned away from donating the plasma for being gay.The local blood bank explained the restrictions to ABC 10News. The blood bank’s chief medical officer, Dr. Mark Edmunds, says the restrictions are in place by the FDA. He says the FDA actually eased some of the restrictions in April of this year, which was an update from a 2015 change. The FDA says the guidelines exist to protect the safety of the blood and plasma supply.In April, the FDA provided the updated guidelines to allow for a larger donor pool in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Before the guideline modifications, a gay man could only donate blood if he abstained from sex for a year. Now, the abstinence time frame is three months.Similar changes were made for people who recently received tattoos or piercings or for travel and residences deferrals related to malaria.Dr. Edmunds says there are studies happening right now to see if and how the donor pool can be expanded even further.The blood bank adopted the FDA’s new regulations on July 31st.
