SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously today to support Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan to expand outdoor dining and retail options during the COVID-19 pandemic.The vote follows Faulconer's July 7 executive order that waived requirements for the temporary use of sidewalks and private parking lots as outdoor dining and retail venues to increase space for physical distancing.Tuesday's vote allows businesses to use adjacent on-street parking to operate while also waiving a majority of permitting fees.``Our local restaurant and retail owners have shown incredible resolve and resilience throughout this pandemic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County had the fourth-most homeless residents in the U.S. this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. San Diego County's data was taken from the 2018 Point in Time Study, completed Jan. 26. The region had an official count of 8,576 homeless residents during the three-hour window in which the count took place, behind Seattle/King County in Washington, Los Angeles County and New York City, which topped the list with 78,676 homeless residents. According to the report, roughly 5,000 members of San Diego's homeless population are unsheltered, living on the street, in a vehicle or in a hand-built structure such as a tent. Another 3,500 homeless residents were sheltered at the time of the study, living in emergency shelters, safe havens and transitional housing. The county's count could be higher than 9,000 homeless residents, however, because the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless did not count residents in recreational vehicles and some residents in shelters. County officials and homeless advocates believe the actual homeless population could total as high as 9,220, but the true count has remained opaque since the task force, which oversees the Point in Time County, announced the error May 31. Overall, California leads all other states with 129,972 homeless individuals, followed by New York at 91,897. At the time the counts were completed in January, California laid claim to 24 percent of the country's total homeless population. Combined with New York, Florida, Texas and Washington, roughly half of the country's homeless population was clustered in five states. Homelessness in California has declined in recent years despite the robust total. The state's homeless population fell by 1,560, or 1.2 percent, from 2017 to 2018 and 9,014, or 6.5 percent, from 2007 to 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Seven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 57, compared to 30 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.The ages of the patients ranged from 60 to 89, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.The total number of cases dropped for the third week in a row. The county logged 1,548 cases last week, compared to 1,689 the week before."While influenza cases have continued to decline, flu activity is still widespread in the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventive measures to avoid getting sick."The seasonal total of influenza cases is now 15,097. Last flu season saw 4,414 by this time and 9,655 in total.County health officials are encouraging people who are sick to first contact their health care provider by telephone or arrange an urgent appointment, but to go to an emergency department if they have any of the following symptoms:-- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath;-- chest pain or abdominal pain;-- sudden dizziness;-- confusion;-- severe or persistent vomiting; or-- flu-like symptoms that appear to get better, but then return with a fever and worse cough.County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and lung disease, and people age 65 or older.Residents can take precautions against contracting the virus by frequent hand washing, cleaning commonly touched surfaces, avoiding contact with sick people, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, retail pharmacies and the county's public health centers.
